Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people argue that historical buildings, such as town halls and art galleries, should be restored whereas, other think that legal authorities should replace them with new modern buildings. I will discuss both views in the upcoming paragraphs and give my opinion.

Some people say that old buildings such as town halls and art galleries should be restored because these buildings represent a twon's history, traditions, and cultural identity. Also, restoring them helps future generations understand how people lived in the past and they can learn a lots of things as well as gain more knowledge. For example, an old town hall can show the architecture style and historical events of a particular period. Additionally, these buildings can attract visitors who are interested in history and architecture. This can boost the local economy by increasing spending at hotels, restaurants, and shops.

However, some individuals think that government should replace them with modern buildings because modern buildings can provide better facilities, such as elevators, air conditioning, spacious rooms and advanced technology. These features make buildings more comfortable and accessible for the public. For instance, a new town hall may provide better services foe people with disabilities and offer more space for government offices. Also, older buildings may have structural damage, outdated electrical system, or other safety problems. Constructing new buildings can help ensure of employees and visitiors.

In my opinion, government should restore them because historic buildings represent a city's culture, traditions, and identity. Restored town halls and art galleries can attract visitores and support local businesses which boosts ecomomy and create employment opportunities for people. Also, older buildings often have unique architectural designs that modern buildings may nit rep[roduce. So, it should be restored rather than replace them with new buildings.

In conclusion, although modern buildings offer more facilities and may require less maintenance, but restoring old buildings is a better option becasue it preserves cultural heritage and traditions as well as unique designs.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address both views and state a consistent preference for restoring historic buildings. The reasons are relevant and supported: preservation can maintain cultural identity, educate future generations and attract visitors, while modern buildings may offer better accessibility and safer facilities. The examples of a town hall’s architecture and services for people with disabilities help make the discussion concrete. Your conclusion also restates your position. To strengthen the response further, develop the comparison more fully—for example, explain how governments might weigh restoration costs against long-term cultural and economic benefits. Some claims, such as restored buildings creating employment, are asserted rather than explained. Overall, the task is covered clearly, with ideas extended and supported, though a few points remain general.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, your opinion, and a conclusion. The progression is easy to follow, and signposts such as “However,” “For example,” and “In conclusion” guide the reader. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some of the flexibility associated with stronger cohesion. However, linking is sometimes mechanical, with repeated “Also” and “Additionally,” and the opinion paragraph repeats several points from the first body paragraph rather than advancing the discussion. Some references are unclear, particularly “So, it should be restored,” where the pronoun does not clearly identify the buildings. Use a wider range of links and make references explicit to improve flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “cultural identity,” “structural damage,” “advanced technology,” and “architectural designs.” These choices communicate the main ideas, but the range is limited by repeated general words such as “buildings,” “modern,” and “better.” There are also noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, including “twon's,” “foe,” “visitiors,” “visitores,” “ecomomy,” and “nit rep[roduce.” Some phrases are awkward or imprecise, such as “ensure of employees and visitiors,” which makes the intended meaning difficult to recover. Aim for more precise collocations and proofread spelling carefully; this would make your vocabulary more accurate and natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses with “because,” “whereas,” and “although,” and most of the argument remains understandable. However, errors occur in sentence construction, agreement, articles, and punctuation. For example, “whereas, other think” has incorrect punctuation and agreement, while “a new town hall may provide” contrasts with the general claim “government should replace them,” where article use is inconsistent. The sentence “Constructing new buildings can help ensure of employees and visitiors” is grammatically incomplete, and “although modern buildings offer …, but restoring…” incorrectly combines two contrast structures. Practise checking each sentence for a complete verb pattern and consistent singular/plural forms, while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
