Student answer (Band 6.0)
On one hand, there are many people who believe that old buildings, such as town halls and art galleries should be restored. While on the other hand, there are some people who argue that governments should replace them with modern buildings. In this essay, I will be discussing both views while I favour that such buildings should be restored to preserve the local history and ancient architecture for future generation to explore.
In one hand, people believe that old buildings, such as town halls and art galleries should be restored because it invites tourists and explorers to the city which will boost the tourism and locals can gain earnings. These old structures can be turned to meuseum so that tourists from all around the world would come to admire it. For example, Notre Dome meusem stuated in Montreal, Canada was a church which was converted to meuseum instead of replacing it. As a reasult, millions of tourists visit it every year which automatically increases the revenue of local vendors and helps boost the economy.
While on the other hand, people argue that government should replace them with new, modern buildings. Many believe that new high rise buildings instead of such old buildings would help tackle housing crisis as many modern cities are facing this problem. For example, due to overflow of the crowd to Kathmandu city there has been housing crisis for a long time but when the local government replaced few old town hall with new high rise buildings, they were able to tackle that situation.
While many people have different views, I believe that old buildings, such as town halls and art galleries, should be restored because those old buildings reflects the culture and traditional practices of the area which can be unique and could attract tourists. For example, Japanese buildings are famous worldwide because of its unique arcitecture and they choose to build new buildings following same style rather than demolishing is and creating something new.
At the end, we should restore such buildings and galleries rather than demolishing and building a new one as it convays our culture and our future generation also has an equal right to experience it. Moreover, it doesn't only have cultural importance but it can also be economically profitable if marketed correctly.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address both views and state a clear preference for restoring historic buildings, supported by reasons about tourism, local income, cultural identity, and future generations. The examples of Notre-Dame in Montreal and Kathmandu make the discussion relevant, and the conclusion reinforces your position. This meets the task well, although the two sides are not developed equally: the tourism example is explained in more detail, while the claim that high-rise buildings helped address Kathmandu’s housing crisis needs clearer explanation and support. Your opinion is clear, but the Japanese architecture example could be linked more directly to restoring existing buildings rather than constructing new ones in a traditional style. Develop these points more precisely to make the argument consistently convincing.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, a paragraph explaining your preference, and a conclusion. This helps the reader follow the overall argument. However, progression within and between paragraphs is sometimes mechanical or unclear. Phrases such as “On one hand” followed by “While on the other hand,” and later “In one hand,” repeat the same contrast and are not always used accurately. The final opinion paragraph also repeats reasons already given rather than extending the discussion. Use a wider range of linking methods, make each paragraph’s purpose distinct, and ensure references such as “it” and “those old buildings” clearly identify what they refer to.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “preserve,” “local history,” “housing crisis,” “revenue,” and “cultural importance.” These choices communicate the main ideas, but the range is limited by repeated general terms such as “old buildings,” “new buildings,” and “tourists,” and some word combinations are unnatural—for example, “boost the tourism” and “gain earnings.” Spelling errors such as “meuseum,” “reasult,” “arcitecture,” and “convays” are noticeable and reduce the accuracy of the writing. Aim for more precise topic vocabulary and check spelling carefully. More natural alternatives include “increase tourism,” “earn income,” and “historic structures,” which would make the argument clearer and more fluent.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses beginning with “because,” “so that,” and “which,” and the main meaning is generally understandable. However, some errors in agreement, articles, plurals, and sentence construction remain. For example, “those old buildings reflects” should use a plural verb, and “a church which was converted to meuseum” needs an article before the noun. The opening “While on the other hand” is also an incomplete or awkwardly joined construction, and “rather than demolishing is” does not form a correct grammatical pattern. Review subject–verb agreement and build contrast sentences as complete, balanced clauses. Greater control of these structures would make your ideas easier to follow.
