Student answer (Band 6.0)
Nowadays there is this ongoing debate on whether old historical buildings should be preserved in their original form or they should be demolished instead, in order to build new up to date modern sky high buildings. I wholeheartedly agree with the former statement.
Cites are known because of their fascinating history that might date back to the fifteen hundreds. For instance, Taj mahal in india Agra, represents culture, architecture and craftsmanship of india that is so mesmerising to people interested in history. Many tourists are attracted to such historical buildings because they reflect culture and beauty which is why people from all over the world come to explore and learn about them.People deeply invested in the stories behind such structures they feel connected to them spiritually and emotionally. This in turn generates a lot of revenue that can be used to maintain these buildings thus opening doors to tourism expansion.
On the other hand, people argue saying its not worth spending significant amount of money to preserve such historical buildings. They believe that money should be spent wisely on new buildings which have modern styles and architecture. Modern buildings can be used as hotels and resorts that might attract more tourists and revenue. Another perspective is that gardens and the buildings can be used as sets for television commercials and movies so they need to be revamped to fit the story of these directors and producers which can might flourish the film industry.
To conclude, I completely understand the later argument however i believe that old buildings should be maintained and preserved instead of replacing them with modern buildings because that might lead to loss of identity of the city itself. Focus should be on the revenue generated through tourism, which should be invested in stabilisation and maintenance of historical sites.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Your response addresses both views and gives a clear, consistent preference for preserving historic buildings. The Taj Mahal example supports the cultural and tourism benefits, while the opposing paragraph mentions modern buildings as hotels and locations for film production. These points are relevant, but they are not equally developed: the case for preservation is explained in more detail, whereas the modern-building argument is mostly a list of possible uses, with little explanation of why replacement would be preferable or how it addresses cost. The conclusion reinforces your position and adds the concern about losing a city’s identity. To strengthen the response further, explain the financial trade-off more directly and develop each side with a specific reason and supporting example.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, one paragraph for each view, and a conclusion. Transitions such as “For instance,” “On the other hand,” and “To conclude” help readers follow the discussion, and the position is easy to identify. However, some connections between ideas are abrupt or unclear. In the preservation paragraph, the move from visitors’ emotional connection to revenue and maintenance would benefit from a more explicit explanation. The second body paragraph also shifts quickly from hotels to film sets. There are occasional cohesion problems within sentences, including “which is why” followed by a long chain of ideas and the unclear reference in “that might lead to loss of identity.” Group related points more carefully and use referencing that makes each link explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “preserved,” “craftsmanship,” “revenue,” “tourism expansion,” and “historical sites.” These choices help communicate the main ideas, and some less common terms show an effort to be precise. However, several expressions are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “Cites are known because of,” “new up to date modern sky high buildings,” and “flourish the film industry.” There are also spelling and capitalization slips in “Taj mahal,” “india,” and “later” where “latter” is intended. These do not prevent understanding, but they reduce precision and naturalness. Aim for more conventional collocations and avoid stacking near-synonyms such as “up to date modern.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses with “because,” “which,” and “that,” and the overall meaning is generally clear. Some sentence patterns are controlled, such as “Modern buildings can be used as hotels and resorts.” However, errors in sentence boundaries, agreement, articles, and clause construction remain. For example, “People deeply invested in the stories behind such structures they feel connected” joins two clauses without a suitable link, while “it’s not worth spending significant amount” needs an article before “significant amount.” The phrase “which can might flourish” also combines incompatible modal verbs. Review punctuation in long sentences and check each clause for a clear subject and verb; greater accuracy across these structures would make the complex sentences more effective.
