Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You give a clear final preference for replacing old buildings, while also recognising their cultural value and explaining why some people want them preserved. The examples of Karachi’s old buildings and town halls used for gatherings make the discussion relevant. However, the two views are not developed evenly: the case for restoration is mainly expressed through broad claims about culture and art galleries, while the case for replacement includes a more specific concern about structural danger and loss of life. Your position also emerges most clearly near the end rather than being established and maintained throughout. To strengthen the response, explain how restoration could preserve heritage safely, and support your preference for replacement with a more precise example or comparison. (The length requirement is met.)
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a basic overall structure: it introduces preservation, moves to the safety argument for replacement, and ends with your opinion. Paragraph breaks help distinguish these stages, and phrases such as “but” and “so” signal some relationships between ideas. However, progression within paragraphs is often difficult to follow because several points are joined together without clear links. For example, the discussion moves from town halls and events to Karachi’s buildings, their appearance, their age, and safety concerns in one long paragraph. The conclusion repeats the idea that old things have a limited life rather than drawing the main arguments together. Use clearer topic sentences and organise each paragraph around one main point, with linking phrases that show contrast, cause, and result.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “traditions,” “art galleries,” “architecture,” and “structure,” so the reader can identify the subject and your main concerns. However, the range is limited and several words or phrases are repeated, particularly “old buildings,” “new and modern,” and “things.” Frequent spelling errors, such as “bulidings,” “goverment,” and “axibition,” make the writing less clear and reduce the accuracy of your vocabulary. Some expressions are also imprecise, for example “old culture” and “limited lives to survive.” Build a more varied set of terms for heritage, restoration, safety, and redevelopment, and check spelling and collocations carefully. More precise wording would help you express the contrast between cultural value and structural risk.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
You attempt to connect ideas in longer sentences, including the contrast in “old things are good but they have limited lives to survive,” and you use some simple sentence forms to communicate your opinion. However, the range of structures is limited, and errors in sentence formation and basic grammar occur frequently, sometimes making relationships between ideas unclear. For example, “these are our old culture they save our traditions” joins clauses without appropriate punctuation or a linking structure, while “they shows culture” has a subject–verb agreement error. There are also problems with articles, plurals, and verb forms, as in “the new one” and “people are says.” Practise building accurate sentences with one main idea, then combine them using controlled clauses and correct punctuation.
