Student answer (Band 6.0)

Architecture captures the true essence of a place's beauty. It is a form of art that requires intricate designing and close attention to detail. A country's artistic spirit lies in the heart of its monuments and buildings. I believe old buldings are a vessel through which cultural heritage of a place is reflected and it is extremely important to preserve, and if needed, restore such buildings.

Some people might argue that doing so is a waste of taxpayers' money and governments should instead replace them with buildings that symbolise modern architecture. Hoewever, such actions would deeply hurt the sentiments of the people who value heritage and art.

In my opinion, historic buildings such as town halls and art galleries should be restored as and when required. It is extremely important to protect structures that hold historic significance for the future generations to come. It is our responsibility as citizens to preserve our history and culture as it is what reflects the years of evolution that led to the existence of what stands today.

If the Colosseum in Rome had been replaced with a modern structure, how would the people have known about the atrocities people had to face in the Roman Empire? There would be no cultural roots and spirit left in people. Historic architecture is a symbol of intellect, pride, and devotion people had towards their community.

In conclusion, I strongly believe such buildings and structures should be protected by the government, however costly it may be, in order to keep the generational pride alive in the citizens.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

Your position is clear: you support restoring historic buildings, and you give relevant reasons about cultural heritage, identity and future generations. The Colosseum example also helps illustrate the value of preserving historic structures. However, the opposing view is only briefly mentioned as a concern about taxpayers’ money and modern architecture; it is not developed with a reason or example, so the two sides are not discussed in balanced detail. Some claims, such as the suggestion that replacing the Colosseum would leave “no cultural roots,” are broad and need clearer explanation. The response is 248 words, two words below the 250-word minimum; the 11 words copied from the prompt are not counted. Develop the opposing argument and explain your example more precisely.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a coherent overall arrangement: it introduces the topic and your view, acknowledges the alternative, develops your position, gives an example, and concludes consistently. Paragraph breaks help distinguish these stages, and phrases such as “In my opinion” and “In conclusion” make the direction easy to follow. However, the opposing view is compressed into one short paragraph, while the later paragraphs repeat the preservation argument rather than progressing through distinct supporting points. The link between the Colosseum and the claim about learning of Roman atrocities is also not fully explained. To improve progression, give each body paragraph a clear purpose and use references such as “these structures” only where their meaning is unmistakable.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic-related vocabulary, including “cultural heritage,” “historic significance,” “preserve,” and “modern architecture.” These choices communicate your ideas clearly, and phrases such as “artistic spirit” show an attempt to use less common language. Some wording is imprecise or unnatural, however: “intricate designing” is not the usual collocation, and “keep the generational pride alive” is unclear. There are also spelling errors in “buldings” and “Hoewever,” which detract from accuracy. Aim for precise, natural collocations rather than elevated phrasing that obscures meaning; for example, explain specifically what a building preserves or how restoration benefits the community.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including the conditional question “If the Colosseum in Rome had been replaced with a modern structure, how would the people have known…?” and the subordinate clause beginning “even though this can be costly” in the task framing is reflected in your discussion. Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical choices need attention. In “it is extremely important to preserve, and if needed, restore such buildings,” the structure is awkward because the object of “important” is not expressed smoothly. The sentence beginning “Historic architecture is a symbol…” also has an unclear relationship between “symbol” and “people had towards their community.” Review clause structure and punctuation in longer sentences, and make sure each modifier clearly attaches to the intended idea.
