Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is widely believed that by watching television children can get essential knowledge, and they should be encouraged to see more television at home and in a learning place. I personally disagree with this statement, as excessive use of screen can cause eye strains in children.

Firstly, people believe television can be effective for children as certain educational programmes and documentries allow children to get more grasp, knowledge about certain subjects like history, maths or geography. Visual illustrations can make a complicated topic easier and kids also prefer screen for learning. Moreover, children are often curious and they seek a wide variety of knowledge, and TV is a perfect source of variety. For instance, every channel is different, a kid who is more interested in history would watch shows manly focused on area. As a result the children can watch their desired show.

On the other hand, there are several negative aspects of excessive use of screen time. The over use of a television can cause dry eyes and sometimes the eyes might get strained, and overtime thr problem might get worse and a risk of permanent eye damage rises. The problem is not limited to the eyes, the time children spend in physical activities also plunges. For instance the problems are not limited to a physical damage, as some children might develop introvertism and then they get dependent on a digital entertainment source rather than developing the social and communication skills. Therefore, children might not only face physical but mental problems like introverism as well.

In conclusion, television can provide essential knowledge to children but the excessive use of TV can cause eye and physical problems. And children might have hard time communicating with others over the time.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction: you disagree with encouraging children to watch more television, and the conclusion restates concerns about eye health, physical activity and communication. You also acknowledge the opposing view by explaining that educational programmes can make subjects such as history and geography easier to understand. This addresses the task and gives relevant reasons. However, the support is uneven: the educational benefits are described generally, while the risks receive more explanation. The example about children choosing different channels is not fully developed, and the link between television and becoming introverted is asserted rather than demonstrated. To strengthen the response, explain how these effects arise and give a specific, relevant example for each main point.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, a paragraph presenting benefits, a paragraph explaining drawbacks, and a conclusion. The contrast between “Firstly” and “On the other hand” helps readers follow the main direction, and the position remains consistent. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. In the second body paragraph, “For instance” introduces a point about physical damage and introversion, but the example does not describe a particular instance. The repeated phrases “the problems are not limited” and “Therefore” also make the progression feel repetitive. The conclusion adds a communication concern without clearly linking it to the earlier discussion. Use more precise referencing and organise each body paragraph around a clearly stated main idea followed by explanation and evidence.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate your main ideas, including “educational programmes,” “visual illustrations,” “physical activities,” and “social and communication skills.” There are also attempts at less common expressions, such as “essential knowledge” and “permanent eye damage.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, and spelling errors are noticeable: “documentries,” “manly,” “overtime,” and “introverism.” Phrases such as “get more grasp” and “a learning place” are also imprecise, while “introvertism” is not a natural term in this context. These issues do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision. Build a reliable range of collocations and check spelling and word forms carefully before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a subordinate clause in “as excessive use of screen can cause eye strains” and a relative clause in “a kid who is more interested in history.” Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. Articles and number are inconsistent in phrases such as “excessive use of screen” and “a physical damage”; the latter also needs a more natural grammatical construction. The sentence beginning “For instance the problems are not limited…” is difficult to follow because its clauses are not clearly connected, and the final sentence begins with “And” after a full stop. Review article use, singular and plural forms, and punctuation around longer sentences. More accurate control of these patterns would make your varied sentence attempts clearer.
