Student answer (Band 5.0)
The table illustrates the percentage of the population aged over 60 in 2000 and in the predicted year 2050 in eight countries.
Overall, Japan is considered to be one of the highest populated country with senior citizens in early centuries while, Nigeria is the least populated country. In the future, Japan and china are the highest populated countries and Nigeria is still at the lowest position respectively.
To begin with, in 2000 Japan has the highest percentage of senior citizens with almost 23% and in the future it is predicted to be 43%. Following this, China has only 10% of the population in 2000 in future it is rose to 36% in 2050. In 2000 the UK has 21% of senior citizens and predicting it to be 32% over a period. Brazil has only 8% of population in 2000 and it can surprisingly rose to 29% in 2050.
In addition to this, in 2000 the population of senior citizens in USA with just 16% and in India only 8% in the predicted year in 2050 it will increase up to 28%-21%. Finally, Nigeria and Mexico has the lowest percentage of senior citizens in 2000 only 5%-7% and in the future Mexico dramatically with 25% whereas, Nigeria only 10%. Japan and china are the most populated in 2000 and remain increases in prediction.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the two years and all eight countries, and you report several key figures accurately, including Japan’s rise from 23% to 43%, China’s increase to 36%, and Nigeria’s low figures. The overview also recognises Japan as highest and Nigeria as lowest in both years. However, the overview is imprecise: China is not among the highest in 2000, and the claim that Japan and China are the highest in 2050 overlooks the UK’s 32% relative to China’s 36% only as a comparison that should be stated clearly. More importantly, the final sentence incorrectly says Japan and China are the most populated in 2000. The US and India figures are also confused: 28% and 21% are 2050 values, not a combined increase. Select and compare the main changes more clearly.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and two detail paragraphs. Grouping countries and using markers such as “To begin with,” “In addition to this,” and “Finally” helps signal movement through the data. However, progression is not consistently clear. The second detail paragraph combines the US and India figures in the unclear phrase “in the predicted year in 2050 it will increase up to 28%-21%,” and the final sentence repeats and contradicts earlier information rather than concluding the comparison. Some linking expressions are mechanical, while “whereas” is not punctuated or connected clearly to the preceding clause. Organise the details into clearer comparisons between the two years, and use referencing and transitions to show exactly which country and year each figure describes.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant topic vocabulary such as “percentage,” “population,” “predicted,” and “senior citizens,” and the meaning is generally recoverable. However, the range is limited and several expressions are inaccurate or unnatural for describing a table. “Highest populated country with senior citizens” confuses population size with the proportion aged over 60; “it can surprisingly rose” is also an unsuitable word combination. Repeated use of “only,” “highest,” and “lowest” makes the account less precise, while “dramatically” is not well supported as a description of Mexico’s change. Choose vocabulary that describes proportions and increases accurately, and avoid adding evaluative language. For example, use “the largest share of people aged over 60” and “rose substantially” where appropriate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and longer sentences, and the opening sentence is clear. However, errors occur frequently, particularly in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries, and these sometimes make comparisons difficult to follow. Examples include “it is rose to 36%,” “it can surprisingly rose,” and “Nigeria and Mexico has,” where the verb forms or agreement are incorrect. The sentence beginning “In 2000 the population … in USA with just 16%” is incomplete, and the sequence “in the predicted year in 2050 it will increase up to 28%-21%” lacks clear grammatical links between the figures. Practise forming complete comparison sentences with a clear subject, verb, and year, and check agreement and tense consistency when describing past data and predictions.
