Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response covers all key features of the pie charts, including the main trends and specific data points. You successfully identified the shift in working hours and the decline in sleep. However, there are some inaccuracies in the data reporting; for instance, you mention 1959 in the body paragraph, but the prompt specifies 1958. Additionally, the description of 'sports' as 7% in 2008 is accurate, but you missed noting that it was not present in the 1958 chart, which is a significant comparative feature. To reach a higher band, ensure all dates are cited correctly and that you explicitly highlight the most striking differences between the two years.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. The progression of ideas is generally easy to follow. You use some cohesive devices like 'while', 'as compared to', and 'in both the years', which help link ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing could be smoother. For example, the final paragraph starts abruptly. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear thematic focus will help improve the flow and cohesion of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'proportion', 'composition', and 'marginal rise'. However, there are some awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'indulged their time working' and 'saw a decline of composition'. These phrases are not natural in an academic context. To improve, focus on using more precise verbs and collocations related to data interpretation, such as 'allocated time to' or 'experienced a downward trend'. Your spelling is accurate throughout, which is a positive aspect of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'The pie charts give information about...' and 'The grown-ups indulged their time working more in 2008... as compared to 1959'. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'in both the years' (should be 'in both years') and 'consituted' (spelling error). Additionally, some phrasing is slightly ungrammatical, such as 'Time spent by relaxing at home'. Increasing your control over complex structures and proofreading for minor prepositional and article errors will help you achieve a higher score.
