Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers the main features of the data and makes relevant comparisons between the two years. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial. While you identified the key trends, such as the increase in working hours and the decrease in sleeping time, the report lacks a more analytical approach to the data. For instance, the overview is slightly inaccurate, as you mention an 'upsurge in relaxing at home' in the final paragraph, but the data shows relaxing at home actually decreased from 13% to 13% (or remained stable depending on interpretation), and your summary of the changes is not fully supported by the figures provided. To improve, ensure your overview highlights the most significant shifts clearly and accurately.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of information. You use some cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'Meanwhile', and 'Overall'. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly awkward, such as the transition in the final paragraph. Additionally, there are issues with sentence structure and punctuation that occasionally disrupt the flow, such as the fragmented sentences 'it became 42%. and in travelling to work 7%'. Improving the variety and accuracy of your linking words will help your ideas flow more naturally.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'illustrates', 'dramatic increase', and 'upsurge'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'time spend' (should be 'time spent') and 'downfall observe' (should be 'downfall observed'). Some phrasing is also slightly unnatural, such as 'after 50 years later', which is redundant. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations and avoiding repetitive or slightly incorrect word forms. Expanding your range of descriptive verbs and nouns related to data trends will also be beneficial.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response contains a mix of simple and some attempted complex structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb tenses and sentence boundaries. For example, 'the people are spending' is incorrect for a past year (1958), and there are several instances of punctuation errors where sentences are incorrectly split, such as 'it became 42%. and in travelling to work 7%'. These errors are noticeable but do not completely impede communication. To improve, focus on consistent tense usage when describing past data and ensure that each sentence has a clear subject and verb.
