Student answer (Band 7.0)

The two pie charts illustrate the percentage distribution of daily time spent by employees in a nation in 1958 and 50 years later, in 2008.

In 1958, the largest proportion of time was allocated to work (33%) and sleep (32%). By contrast, only a small fraction was devoted to commuting (2%) and relaxing at home (8%). Social activities such as going out with friends and family accounted for 19%.

By 2008, there was a significant rise in working hours, which increased to 42%, while commuting also grew to 7%. In contrast, sleeping time fell sharply by 7%, dropping to 25%. Similarly, time spent with friends and family declined to 13%. Interestingly, relaxing at home showed a slight increase compared to 1958.

Overall, the comparison highlights a clear shift: employees in 2008 devoted more time to work and commuting, while sleep and socializing saw noticeable reductions.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the charts and makes relevant comparisons between the two years. However, the response is 145 words long, failing to meet the 150-word minimum requirement. This under-length impacts the overall development of the response, as the analysis remains somewhat brief. While the key trends are identified, such as the increase in work and commuting and the decrease in sleep, the lack of sufficient word count prevents a more thorough exploration of the data. To improve, ensure you expand on the data points and provide a more detailed overview to comfortably exceed the minimum length requirement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a summary. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the years and the overall trend. Cohesive devices such as 'By contrast', 'In contrast', and 'Similarly' are used appropriately to guide the reader through the comparisons. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from the 1958 data to the 2008 data and concluding with a summary. The structure is sound, and the flow of information is easy to follow throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The vocabulary is generally appropriate for the task, using terms like 'percentage distribution', 'allocated', 'fraction', and 'noticeable reductions'. The range is sufficient to convey the information clearly. There are no significant errors in word choice or spelling that impede communication. While the vocabulary is functional and accurate, it lacks the variety of less common lexical items that would elevate the score to a higher band. Incorporating more precise synonyms for 'increase' or 'decrease' would further strengthen this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The response demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Grammatical control is strong, with very few errors. Examples such as 'By 2008, there was a significant rise in working hours, which increased to 42%' show a good command of complex sentence construction. Punctuation is used correctly, and the sentences are generally error-free. The accuracy is high, and the minor slips do not interfere with the clarity of the report. The grammatical range is sufficient for the task requirements.
