Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response attempts to address the prompt by describing the pie charts, but it fails to provide a clear overview or effectively highlight the main features and comparisons. The information is presented in a fragmented manner, and the data points are often inaccurate or poorly contextualized. For instance, the statement 'the adults can working grow nearly 33%' is unclear and does not accurately reflect the data. The response lacks a logical summary of the trends, and the inclusion of irrelevant information (such as mentioning 'America') suggests a misunderstanding of the provided data. To improve, focus on identifying the most significant changes between 1958 and 2008 and grouping information logically rather than listing percentages in isolation.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is divided into paragraphs, but the internal structure of these paragraphs is weak. There is a lack of logical progression, and the use of cohesive devices is either absent or misused, such as the repetitive use of 'however' and 'but also' which do not effectively link ideas. The referencing is unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparison between the two years. The sentences are often disjointed, and the overall flow is interrupted by grammatical errors and awkward phrasing. To improve, use a wider range of linking words (e.g., 'in contrast', 'whereas', 'consequently') and ensure each paragraph has a clear, singular focus.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is very limited and repetitive, relying heavily on basic verbs like 'working', 'spending', and 'doing'. There are frequent errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'deline' (likely meant 'decline') and 'the adults can percentages of the day'. The phrasing is often unnatural, which hinders the clarity of the report. To reach a higher band, you need to use a more varied range of vocabulary to describe trends, such as 'increased significantly', 'remained stable', or 'accounted for'. Additionally, ensure that you use terminology appropriate for a formal report rather than conversational language.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that often impede communication. There are significant issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'the adults can working'), incorrect tense usage, and sentence fragments. The structure is predominantly simple, and there is a lack of complex sentence forms. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with unnecessary ellipses and poor capitalization. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence structures, ensuring that subjects and verbs agree, and practicing the correct use of prepositions and articles. Reducing the number of errors in basic structures is essential before attempting more complex grammatical forms.
