Student answer (Band 6.5)

The given pie charts represent how working adults in a specific country spend their time, particularly in 1958 and 2008. The various activities labeled in the charts are given in percentage, divided per day.

In the overall perspective, work has been given the utmost importance compared to other activities, especially in 2008 where it has increased further by a few percent. Similarly, sleeping has the second most percentage in both the years. However, the majority of difference is seen in the amount of time spent with the family. In 1958, the percentage is at 19% whereas in 2008, it has dropped down to only 6% throughout. Another significant contrast is visible in the category of travelling to work. Comparatively, people spent less time in travelling to work, but in 2008, the percentage expanded by 5%. Relaxing at home as an activity remained mostly the same, but had a slight rise during 2008.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have successfully identified the main features of the data and provided relevant comparisons between 1958 and 2008. You covered the key categories such as work, sleep, and family time. However, the response lacks a clear overview or summary statement that synthesises the most significant trends. While you mention that work is important, a more comprehensive overview would highlight the most striking shifts, such as the significant decline in family time versus the increase in work and travel. Additionally, some data points are described vaguely (e.g., 'a few percent'), which limits the precision expected in an Academic Task 1 response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organised into an introduction and a body paragraph. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'In the overall perspective', 'Similarly', and 'However', to link your ideas. However, the progression of ideas could be smoother. The transition between the general overview and the specific data points is a bit abrupt. Furthermore, the paragraphing is insufficient; for a report of this nature, separating the overview from the detailed analysis into distinct paragraphs would improve the structure and readability significantly.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'utmost importance', 'significant contrast', and 'expanded'. However, there are some instances of slightly unnatural phrasing, such as 'divided per day' and 'the second most percentage'. To reach a higher band, you should aim for more precise collocations and a wider variety of reporting verbs and comparative structures. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, but it lacks the sophistication and flexibility required for higher band scores.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. Most of your sentences are clear and easy to follow. There are some minor grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'the second most percentage' (should be 'the second highest percentage') and 'the majority of difference is seen' (should be 'the most significant difference'). Punctuation is generally accurate, and these errors do not impede communication. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of complex structures, such as relative clauses or participle phrases, to describe the data more fluidly.
