Student answer (Band 7.0)

The pie charts compare how employed adults in a single nation allocated their daily time across various activities in 1958 and 2008.

Overall, working and sleeping occupied the majority of adults' time in both years. Over the 50-year period, time spent working, travelling to work, and relaxing at home increased, whereas time devoted to sleeping and socializing with family and friends experienced significant declines.

In 1958, working accounted for 33% of the day, which grew to 42% by 2008. Relaxing at home also rose from 8% to 13%, while commuting increased modestly from 2% to 7%. Additionally, a new category, playing sports, emerged in 2008, taking up 7% of the daily schedule.

Conversely, sleeping saw a notable decrease from 32% in 1958 to 25% in 2008.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response provides a clear overview and identifies key trends, such as the increase in working hours and the decline in sleep. However, the response is significantly under the 150-word minimum requirement, which prevents a full development of the data. While the main features are selected, the analysis is somewhat brief. To improve, you should ensure you describe all categories shown in the charts, including those that remained stable or showed minor changes, to ensure a more comprehensive report that meets the length requirement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview paragraph, and a body paragraph detailing the data. The use of cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'Conversely', and 'Additionally' helps to guide the reader through the information. The progression of ideas is logical, moving from general trends to specific data points. To reach a higher band, ensure that your paragraphing is balanced and that you use a wider variety of cohesive devices to link sentences and ideas more fluidly.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the data, such as 'allocated', 'accounted for', 'modestly', and 'notable decrease'. The word choice is generally accurate and appropriate for an academic report. There are no significant spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations or less common lexical items to demonstrate a wider range, such as using 'witnessed a surge' instead of 'grew to' or 'experienced a contraction' instead of 'saw a decrease'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The response demonstrates a good command of grammatical structures. You have successfully used a mix of simple and complex sentences, such as 'The pie charts compare how employed adults... allocated their daily time' and 'In 1958, working accounted for 33% of the day, which grew to 42% by 2008.' The sentences are generally error-free, and punctuation is used correctly. To achieve a higher band, aim to include a greater variety of complex structures, such as passive voice constructions or more sophisticated subordinate clauses to describe the data comparisons.
