Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response fails to address the task correctly. The prompt asks for a summary of how working adults spent their time in 1958 and 2008. However, the student has completely misinterpreted the data, describing reasons for leaving or staying in the U.K. instead. Because the content is entirely irrelevant to the provided charts, the response cannot be assessed as a successful summary of the data. While the student does report figures, they are reporting on the wrong topic entirely, which significantly impacts the score for this criterion.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. There is a clear attempt to use cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'Looking at the chart in more detail', and 'Similarly'. However, the logical progression is undermined by the fact that the content does not relate to the actual task. The use of referencing is generally clear, but the overall structure is wasted on an incorrect interpretation of the data provided in the prompt.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'illustrate', 'proportion', 'significant', and 'respectively'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'reasons why some people to choose to leave', which is grammatically awkward. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the student's intended meaning, it is not sophisticated or varied enough to reach higher bands. The lexical choices are functional but lack the precision required for a high-level academic report.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'the percentage of the reasons why some people to choose to leave' (incorrect infinitive usage) and 'people who want to stay in the U.K because of their family and friends, it accounts for' (comma splice/run-on structure). While the meaning is generally understandable, these frequent errors in sentence construction and punctuation prevent the writing from being considered accurate. The control of grammar is inconsistent throughout the text.
