Student answer (Band 6.5)
The pie charts display information regarding the percentage of the day that adults spend on various activities. The comparison is between the years,1958 and 2008. Back in 1958, most adults spent their time working (33%), followed by sleeping (32%) or going out with friends (19%). The lease common activity done by adults in the late 1950's was travelling. Only 2% of adults spent their day travelling new places.
By the time 2008 came around, not a lot changed. 42% of adults still preferred spending their day working, 25% preferred sleeping followed by 13% of adults who preffered staying in and relaxing at home.
A major difference from 1958 to 2008, is the amount of adults who preferred spending their time by going out with friends and family. The percentage decreased from 19% in 1958 to only 6% in 2008. This activity used to be the third most common activity among adults in 1958, but was replaced for that position by the 13% of adults who chose to relaxe at home in 2008.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers the main features of the charts and makes relevant comparisons between the two years. However, the analysis is somewhat limited. For instance, the report mentions that 'not a lot changed' between 1958 and 2008, which is a subjective interpretation that overlooks significant shifts in specific categories like working hours and social activities. While the key data points are included, the overview could be more analytical by highlighting the most striking trends rather than just listing percentages. To reach a higher band, ensure that the overview synthesises the data more effectively rather than simply describing the charts in isolation.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organised into paragraphs, with an introduction and body paragraphs that group information by time period and comparison. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'By the time 2008 came around' and 'A major difference from 1958 to 2008', which help the reader follow the progression of ideas. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs is slightly abrupt. The use of referencing is generally clear, though some of the linking phrases are a bit mechanical. Overall, the information is presented in a coherent manner that is easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing for clear communication of the data. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'various activities' and 'major difference'. However, there are a few spelling errors, such as 'lease' instead of 'least' and 'relaxe' instead of 'relax'. Additionally, the word choice is occasionally repetitive, relying heavily on 'preferred' and 'spent their day'. To improve, you should aim for more varied synonyms for 'increase', 'decrease', and 'spend time' to demonstrate a more flexible range of lexical items.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical inaccuracies. For example, 'the years,1958 and 2008' contains incorrect punctuation, and '1950's' should not have an apostrophe for a decade. There are also minor errors in preposition usage and verb agreement, such as 'amount of adults' (which should be 'number of adults' as it is countable). Despite these errors, the grammar does not impede communication, and the sentence structures are varied enough to convey the intended information effectively.
