Student answer (Band 6.5)
The pie charts give information on time spent by working adults on a variety of activities. The data is presented for two years, that is, 1958 and 2008 in percentages.
Overall, most adults spent most of their time working in both years but spent the least time traveling to work in in 1958, and going out with family and friends in 2008. More adults started to focus on work in 2008 which almost negated the work-life balance in 1958.
In 1958, adults spent 33% of their time working. They spent almost as much time sleeping as they worked as they slept 32% of the time. They went out with friends and family for 19% of the time and played sports 7% of the time. Traveling to work had the least amount of time invested into it at 2%. In 1958 there was work-life balance.
In 2008, there was an 11% increase in time spent working landing it at 42% while time spent sleeping decreased to 25%, They relaxed at home more at 13% and traveled to work 7% of the time. The time spent going out with friends and family declined drastically

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have successfully identified the main features of the charts and made relevant comparisons between 1958 and 2008. You clearly highlighted the increase in work hours and the corresponding decrease in sleep. However, the response is incomplete; the final paragraph cuts off abruptly mid-sentence, failing to report the data for 'going out' in 2008 or the 'relaxing at home' category for 1958. To achieve a higher band, ensure all data points are fully presented and the summary is brought to a logical conclusion. The analysis of trends is generally accurate, but the omission of key data points limits the overall coverage of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'In 1958' and 'In 2008', to transition between time periods. However, the cohesion is sometimes mechanical, and the abrupt ending of the final paragraph negatively impacts the overall flow and logical progression of the text. To improve, ensure that each paragraph is fully developed and that you use a wider variety of linking words to connect ideas within and between sentences, rather than relying on simple chronological markers.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'negated', 'invested', and 'drastically'. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'negated the work-life balance', which is not the most natural collocation in this context. You also repeat certain phrases, such as 'spent... of the time'. To reach a higher band, try to vary your vocabulary by using synonyms for 'spent' (e.g., 'allocated', 'devoted') and avoid repetitive sentence structures. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly despite these minor limitations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While many sentences are clear, there are some grammatical errors, such as 'in in 1958' (repetition) and 'landing it at 42%' (informal phrasing). The punctuation is generally acceptable, but the incomplete final sentence is a significant error that affects the overall accuracy. To improve, focus on proofreading to catch small errors and aim to incorporate more sophisticated complex structures, such as relative clauses or participle phrases, to demonstrate greater control over your writing.
