Student answer (Band 7.0)

The graphs compare what the working population of a selected nation did on a daily basis in 1958 and 2008.

Looking at the charts, we can observe that work-based activities had generally increased in frequency while a few other parts of the adults' lives have declined in popularity throughout the 50 year period.

In 1958, most people spent an almost equal amount of time working or sleeping, at 33 percent and 32 percent of the proportion respectively. In addition, they were also using 2 percent of their day commuting to their jobs. This changed drastically as, in 2008, the working adults were spending 48 percent of a day on their occupations or travelling to them. On the other hand, sleeping, the joint most spent activities five decades ago, has dropped to comprising only 25 percent of the grown-up's days.

Another significant regression can be seen in how much people are going out with their loved ones. Spending 19 percent of their day hanging out with their friends and family in 1958, adults were cutting back on allocating time for this particular activity in 2018 as it decreased from being third most popular amongst all of the categories to just getting 6 percent, putting it in the last place.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have successfully identified the main trends and made relevant comparisons between the two years. You highlighted the shift in work-related activities and the decline in sleep and social time. However, the response is incomplete as it fails to mention several categories shown in the charts, such as 'leisure' or 'housework', which are necessary for a comprehensive summary. Additionally, there is a factual error where you mention '2018' instead of '2008'. To reach a higher band, ensure all data categories are addressed and double-check that your references to the years are consistent with the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with clear paragraphing. You use some cohesive devices effectively, such as 'In addition', 'On the other hand', and 'Another significant regression'. However, the flow between some sentences is slightly mechanical. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the transition between the overview and the body paragraphs could be smoother. Ensure that your referencing is precise; for instance, the term 'joint most spent activities' is slightly awkward in this context. Overall, the structure is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'regression', 'occupations', and 'proportion'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'grown-up's days' (which sounds informal) and 'hanging out' (which is colloquial). To improve, aim for more academic collocations and precise terminology. While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning, incorporating more sophisticated, topic-specific language would help elevate your score to the next level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. Most of your sentences are clear, though there are occasional errors, such as 'the joint most spent activities' (which should be 'the joint most time-consuming activities') and '33 percent and 32 percent of the proportion' (which is slightly redundant). Punctuation is generally accurate, and your grammar does not impede communication. To reach a higher band, focus on increasing the variety of complex structures and ensuring greater precision in your phrasing.
