Student answer (Band 7.5)

The pie charts illustrate the comparison in terms of the distribution of time spent by employed individuals in a country in 1958 and 2008.

Overall, it can be seen that working and sleeping took up most of employees' time, with people spending most of their time on working in both years. The number of hours spending on working, relaxing at home, travelling to work, and playing sports increased, whereas those spending on sleeping and going out with friends and family decreased.

On the one hand, working consumed 33% of workers' time in 1958, which went up to 42% in 2008, consistently taking up the most amount of time, whereas travelling to work and playing sports consumed not more than 7% of their time in both years. Relaxing at home made up 8% in 1958 and 13% in 2008.

On the other hand, following working hours, the time spent on sleeping was the second-highest one in both years, making up 32% in 1958 and 25% in 2008. When it comes to the time spent on going out with friends and family, it dropped remarkably from 19% to 6%.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response effectively identifies the main features of the data and makes relevant comparisons between the two years. You have successfully highlighted the key trends, such as the increase in working hours and the decrease in time spent sleeping and socializing. The overview is clear and provides a good summary of the overall shifts. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are described with precision; for example, you mention 'travelling to work and playing sports consumed not more than 7%', but it would be more precise to specify the exact percentages for each to fully support your analysis.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs that group the information effectively. You use cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'whereas' to link ideas. The progression of information is easy to follow. To improve, ensure that the transition between sentences is smoother; some sentences feel slightly mechanical. Additionally, ensure that referencing is always clear, as the connection between the categories and the percentages is generally well-managed but could be more fluid.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'distribution', 'consumed', and 'remarkably'. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning clearly. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'The number of hours spending on working', which should be 'The number of hours spent working'. To achieve a higher band, try to incorporate more sophisticated synonyms and ensure that collocations are natural. For instance, instead of 'the second-highest one', you could use 'the second most significant category'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. Most of your sentences are clear and easy to understand. There are some minor grammatical errors, such as 'those spending on sleeping' (should be 'time spent sleeping') and 'the number of hours spending on working' (should be 'spent working'). These errors do not impede communication. To improve, focus on consistent verb forms and noun-phrase construction. Increasing the variety of complex structures, such as using more participial phrases, would help demonstrate greater control.
