Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses the task by identifying the main features and comparing the two years. You successfully highlighted the primary trends, such as the increase in working time and the decrease in socialising. However, the response lacks a clear overview paragraph, which is essential for a Band 7 or higher. While you have included data, the analysis is somewhat mechanical, listing figures rather than synthesising the information into a cohesive summary. To improve, ensure you group related data points more effectively and provide a distinct summary of the most significant trends at the beginning.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the information. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat repetitive and basic (e.g., 'In 1958', 'In 2008', 'Then talking about'). There is a lack of sophisticated linking words to connect ideas between sentences and paragraphs. The progression of ideas is generally logical, but the flow is occasionally interrupted by awkward phrasing and mechanical transitions. Improving the variety of linking expressions would significantly enhance the overall coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the main points, such as 'fluctuated', 'decreased', and 'percentage'. However, there are several spelling errors (e.g., 'onn', 'frieds', 'talikng', 'icrease') and some awkward word choices, such as 'increase manually' and 'vary rare'. These errors occasionally distract the reader. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations and ensure your spelling is accurate. Expanding your vocabulary to include more varied ways of describing trends—such as 'witnessed a significant rise' or 'remained relatively stable'—would be beneficial.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('The pie chart illustrate', 'sleeping was also had'), incorrect preposition usage ('in comparison of'), and missing articles. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to lower the score. You should focus on proofreading for basic errors like verb tense consistency and article usage. Practising more complex sentence structures, such as using relative clauses or participial phrases, will also help improve your range.
