Student answer (Band 7.5)
The provided pie charts illustrate the proportion of day spent by working adults on different activities in a country in 1958 and 2008.
Overall, it is clear that working was the biggest proportion in both years. However, travelling to work and going out with friends/family made up the lowest in 1958 and 2008 respectively and playing sports remained constant.
Looking at the pie charts in more detail, working accounted for 33% in 1958, which increased significantly to 42% by 2008. Sleeping experienced a decline from 32% in 1958 to 25% by the end of the period. Relaxing at home witnessed an increased from 8% to 13% in the same period.
In terms of charts, going out with friends or family stood at 19% in 1958, which reduced to 6% by 2008. The figure of travelling to work was amounted to 2% in 1958, which rose to 7% by 2008. By contrast, playing sports remained 7% in each years.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task. You have provided a clear overview and selected key features to compare, such as the increase in working hours and the decline in time spent going out. The data is accurately reported, and the comparison between the two years is consistent. To reach a higher band, ensure that the overview highlights the most significant trends more explicitly, perhaps by grouping the categories that increased versus those that decreased. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements for a clear, analytical summary.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You have used some cohesive devices effectively, such as 'By contrast' and 'In terms of'. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the referencing could be smoother. For example, the phrase 'In terms of charts' is a bit awkward; a better transition would be 'Regarding the specific activities'. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate, and the information is presented in a coherent manner throughout the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information accurately, including terms like 'proportion', 'accounted for', and 'witnessed an increase'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'an increased' (should be 'an increase') and 'was amounted to' (should be 'amounted to'). While you attempt to use varied vocabulary, some phrases are slightly repetitive. To improve, try to incorporate more precise synonyms for 'increase' or 'decrease' and ensure that verb forms are used correctly in context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'the biggest proportion' (which is slightly imprecise; 'the largest proportion' or 'the greatest amount of time' would be better) and 'in each years' (should be 'in each year'). Additionally, the passive construction 'was amounted to' is grammatically incorrect. Despite these errors, the grammar does not impede communication, and the sentence variety is sufficient for this task type.
