Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response successfully identifies the main features and makes relevant comparisons between the two years. You have provided a clear overview and supported your points with data from the charts. However, the analysis could be improved by grouping the trends more effectively rather than listing them year by year. For instance, categorizing activities into those that increased and those that decreased would provide a more analytical approach. Additionally, ensure that all data points are accurate; for example, you noted working was 33% in 1958, but the text later refers to it as one-third (33.3%). Maintaining consistency in data reporting is essential for a higher band score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use some cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'Subsequently', and 'Similarly' to link ideas. However, the flow is occasionally hindered by repetitive sentence structures and some mechanical transitions. For example, the start of the third and fourth paragraphs relies heavily on simple chronological listing. To improve, try to vary your cohesive devices and ensure that the relationship between sentences is more fluid. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different time periods, which helps the reader follow the progression of information.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'illustrate', 'drastic decline', and 'tripled'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'working was the popular activity' (should be 'most popular') and 'which more then tripled' (should be 'than'). The vocabulary is functional but lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher bands. To improve, focus on using more varied reporting verbs and precise adjectives to describe trends, and ensure that your spelling and word forms are consistently accurate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'working was the popular activity' (missing superlative), 'which more then tripled' (incorrect 'then' vs 'than'), and 'an slight increase' (incorrect article usage). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly regarding comma usage in lists. To reach a higher band, you should aim for greater accuracy in complex sentences and pay closer attention to articles, prepositions, and comparative structures. Reducing these frequent minor errors will significantly improve the clarity of your writing.
