Student answer (Band 6.0)
The pie charts illustrate the proportion of time spent by adults on different activities in 1958 and 2008 in a specific nation.
Overall, most of the adults spent their day working, and this trend of working surged significantly in the latter years. Additionally, travel time to work also rose significantly over the period. Meanwhile, adults spent the same time in both periods playing sports.
In 1958, most of the time of an adult's day was accounted for by working (33%) and sleeping(32%). Going out with friends and family made up 19% of their day. Furthermore, adults spent 6% of their day relaxing at home. Meanwhile, playing sports(6%) and travelling to work (2%) accounted for the least time spent by adults.
By 2008, working hours surged rapidly, and adults spent 42% of their day working. Time for sleeping fell to 25%, whereas adults relaxed at home more frequently. Moreover, activities like playing sports, going out, and travel time made up 20% of the day in the life of an adult.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main features of the charts, identifying key trends such as the increase in working hours and the decrease in sleep. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial. For instance, the summary of the 2008 data groups 'playing sports, going out, and travel time' into a single figure of 20%, which is a missed opportunity to provide a more detailed comparison of individual categories. While the overview is clear, the report lacks a more nuanced comparison between the two years, particularly regarding the specific shifts in the smaller categories. To reach a higher band, ensure that all significant data points are clearly highlighted and compared rather than just listed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. The use of cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'Additionally', 'Meanwhile', and 'By 2008' helps to guide the reader through the information. However, the transition between the final summary of 2008 and the specific data points could be smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is generally easy to follow. To improve, ensure that cohesive devices are used to link sentences more fluidly rather than just acting as sentence starters, which can occasionally feel slightly mechanical.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing for clear communication of the data. You have used some effective verbs like 'surged' and 'accounted for'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a tendency to repeat basic phrasing. For example, 'spent their day' and 'time spent' are used repeatedly. To achieve a higher band, try to incorporate a wider variety of synonyms and more precise collocations related to data reporting, such as 'constituted', 'represented', or 'experienced a significant rise'. The current range is sufficient but lacks the flexibility required for a higher score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are grammatically accurate, and errors are rare and do not impede communication. For example, 'most of the time of an adult's day was accounted for by working' is a well-constructed passive structure. However, there is a lack of more sophisticated complex structures that would demonstrate a wider grammatical range. Punctuation is generally correct, though there is a missing space after 'sleeping' in the third paragraph. Overall, the control of grammar is good, but increasing the variety of sentence types would enhance the score.
