Student answer (Band 6.5)

The pie charts illustrate how working adults in a particular country spent their time in 1958 and 2008.

Overall, the proportion allocated for working increased while the percentage of sleeping decreased over the period given. It is also evident that working was allocated the highest proportions in both years.

In 1958, working was allocated the highest proportion, at 33%, followed by sleeping, going out with friends and relaxing at home at 32%, 19% and 8% respectively. Over the same period, travelling to work was given the smallest percentage at 2%, followed by playing sports at 6%.

By 2008, the percentage allocated to working had went up to 42% while sleeping had decreased to 25% and relaxing at home increased to 13%. Both travelling to work and and playing sports became equal in 2008 at 7% each while while going out with family and friends decreased to 6% over the same period.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response covers all key features of the data, providing a clear overview and supporting details for both 1958 and 2008. You successfully identified the main trends, such as the increase in working hours and the decrease in sleeping time. However, the report could be improved by more effectively grouping the data. For instance, instead of listing every category in a sequence, you could contrast the categories that grew with those that declined. While the main features are highlighted, the comparison between the two years could be more analytical to reach a higher band. Overall, the task is addressed well with sufficient data selection.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use cohesive devices such as 'Overall,' 'In 1958,' and 'By 2008' to guide the reader. However, the cohesion is sometimes slightly mechanical. There are also minor issues with repetition, such as the double use of 'while' in the final sentence ('while 7% each while while going out...'). Improving the variety of linking phrases and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would enhance the flow and coherence of the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'proportion,' 'allocated,' and 'period given.' The vocabulary is generally accurate and appropriate for a report on statistical data. However, the range is somewhat limited and relies on repetitive phrasing (e.g., 'allocated the highest proportion' is used twice). To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more varied synonyms for 'increased' or 'decreased' and use more precise collocations to describe the shifts in data. The current level is sufficient to convey meaning clearly without significant errors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is clear, there are some grammatical errors that detract from the overall quality. For example, 'had went up' is incorrect; it should be 'had gone up.' Additionally, there is a punctuation/typing error in the final paragraph: 'travelling to work and and playing sports' and the repeated 'while while.' These errors are noticeable but do not impede communication. To improve, focus on ensuring correct verb forms in the past perfect tense and proofreading for minor slips in word repetition.
