Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the charts, but there are significant issues with accuracy and interpretation. You incorrectly refer to the subjects as 'youngsters' or 'young adults' throughout, whereas the prompt specifies 'working adults'. Additionally, the description of the data is sometimes imprecise; for example, stating that 42% is 'little bit low from half' is informal and lacks analytical precision. While you identify key trends like the increase in work and the decrease in time spent with family, the summary lacks a clear, cohesive overview of the most significant shifts between the two years. To improve, ensure you accurately identify the subjects and use more formal, objective language to describe the data trends.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally repetitive. Phrases like 'In 1958' and 'In 2008' are used to start paragraphs, but the internal flow between sentences is often disjointed. For instance, the transition between discussing specific percentages and the concluding summary of the 2008 data is abrupt. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of linking words (e.g., 'consequently', 'in contrast', 'furthermore') to connect your ideas more fluidly and improve the logical progression of your analysis.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision required for higher bands. You use informal phrasing such as 'crystal clear', 'little bit low', and 'new activate' (which is a grammatical error for 'activities'). The range of vocabulary is limited, relying on basic verbs like 'climbed', 'rose', and 'decreased'. To improve, incorporate more sophisticated collocations and academic terminology suitable for describing statistical data, such as 'experienced a significant decline', 'remained relatively stable', or 'accounted for a substantial proportion'. Avoid informal, conversational language in an academic report.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
There are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the clarity of the text. Examples include 'The pie charts demonstrates' (subject-verb agreement), 'youngsters that work utilize' (awkward phrasing), and 'new activate also started' (incorrect word form). The sentence structures are mostly simple or compound, with limited attempts at complex sentences. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with several missing commas and full stops. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement, correct word forms (e.g., 'activities' vs 'activate'), and practice constructing more complex sentences using relative clauses or subordinating conjunctions to demonstrate a wider grammatical range.
