Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response provides a clear overview and selects key features for comparison. However, it fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which significantly impacts the development of the response. While the main trends are identified, the analysis is somewhat brief and lacks the depth required for a higher band. The data is generally accurate, but the under-length nature of the essay means that some aspects of the task are not fully developed. To improve, ensure that you provide a more detailed breakdown of the data and include a concluding summary or a more comprehensive overview to meet the length requirements and fully explore the trends.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'From a comparative analysis', and 'Similarly' are used to link sentences and ideas. However, the flow is somewhat mechanical, and the transition between the overview and the body paragraphs could be smoother. The referencing is generally clear, but the overall structure is quite simple. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of cohesive devices and ensuring that the relationship between sentences is more sophisticated and less reliant on basic transition words.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to describe the trends effectively. Phrases like 'comparative analysis' and 'accounting for' are used correctly. However, there is some repetition of basic verbs like 'rose' and 'fell'. The use of 'time spending activity' is slightly unnatural; 'time-consuming activity' or 'activity on which time was spent' would be more precise. To improve, try to incorporate a broader range of synonyms for describing trends, such as 'fluctuated', 'remained stable', or 'experienced a significant decline', and ensure collocations are natural.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the grammar is generally clear, there are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'the year of 1958 and 2008' (should be 'the years 1958 and 2008') and 'time in working' (should be 'time working'). The sentence 'the value of relaxing at home and travelling to work rose, accounting for 8% and 2% respectively in 1958 to considerably 13% and 7% in 2008' is somewhat clunky and grammatically awkward. To achieve a higher score, focus on increasing the variety of complex structures and ensuring greater precision in prepositional usage and sentence construction.
