Student answer (Band 6.0)
The two pie charts illustrate the proportion of time devoted by adults on five distinct categories in a specific nation between 1958 and 2008.
Overall, it is lucid that working allocated the highest ratio in both years. In comparison, in the beginning year, working and sleeping was almost uniform while the former witnessed an increase and the latter showed a downward trend by the terminal year.
In 1958, time spend on working was the dominant, standing at 33%, closely followed by sleeping, at 32%. The figure for going out with friends or family was relatively lower, which accounted for approximately a fifth. Furthermore, the percentage of people relaxing at home and playing sports were registered around 8% and 6% respectively. Travelling to work was the lowest contributor in the first year, with 2%.
Nevertheless, the trend was almost altered in the following year. Working was again ranked first, with experiencing escalation of nearly a tenth in 2008. Likewise,
sleeping retained second position whereas it was reduced by 7%. Time spend on relaxing at home hovered to 13%. The notable feature is that playing sports and travelling to work showed constant figure, at 7% each. The ratio of going out with friends/family plunged to 6%, which was least figure in the last year.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all requirements of the task. You have successfully identified the main features and made relevant comparisons between the two years. The overview is clear, highlighting the dominance of working and the shift in trends. However, there are some inaccuracies in data reporting; for example, you state that playing sports and travelling to work were constant at 7% in 2008, but the data suggests different values. Additionally, the statement that working experienced an escalation of 'nearly a tenth' is slightly imprecise. To reach a higher band, ensure that data points are transcribed with absolute precision and that comparisons are more clearly linked to the specific percentages provided in the charts.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organised with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'In comparison', 'Furthermore', and 'Nevertheless' to guide the reader. However, the use of some cohesive devices is slightly mechanical or awkward, such as 'the trend was almost altered' or 'hovered to 13%'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two time periods. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that the transition between sentences feels more natural and less formulaic.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, including terms like 'proportion', 'dominant', and 'escalation'. However, there are several instances of imprecise word choice and collocation errors, such as 'lucid' (instead of 'clear'), 'terminal year' (which sounds unnatural in this context), and 'constant figure' (which is not the best way to describe static data). Some phrasing, such as 'the trend was almost altered', is vague. To achieve a higher score, focus on using more precise academic collocations and ensure that your word choices are contextually appropriate for describing statistical data.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is sufficient for the task. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'time spend on working' (should be 'spent'), 'least figure' (should be 'the least figure'), and 'experiencing escalation' (which lacks a proper subject). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, pay closer attention to verb forms, article usage, and ensuring that your complex sentences are constructed with grammatical accuracy.
