Student answer (Band 6.0)

The two pie charts illustrate how adults spent their day in a typical country on six activities from 1958 to 2008. Overall, working accounted for the largest share which rose significantly by 2008. Moreover, travelling to work, relaxing at home and playing sports rose in the second graph. In contrast, going out with friends/family and sleeping showed a decreasing trend.

In 1958, working had the highest proportion of 33% which rose to 42% by 2008. Similarly, playing sports showed a modest rise from 5% to 7%, travelling to work increased from 2% to 7%, relaxing at home grew from 8% to 13%.

However, initially sleeping was the second highest value of 32% which showed a fall to 25% over a fifty-year period. Following a similar trend, going out with friends/family even fell sharply from 19% to 6% by 2008.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers all key features of the charts and makes relevant comparisons. However, the response is 139 words long, failing to meet the 150-word minimum requirement. This under-length significantly impacts the ability to fully develop the analysis, as the overview and body paragraphs are quite concise. While the main trends are identified, the lack of sufficient detail and the failure to meet the length constraint prevent a higher score. To improve, ensure you provide a more detailed overview and expand on the data points to reach the word count.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from general trends to specific data points. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'Moreover', 'In contrast', and 'Similarly' are used effectively to link sentences and ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the increasing trends from the decreasing ones. The structure is coherent, though the brevity of the response limits the complexity of the cohesive links.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, with terms like 'proportion', 'decreasing trend', and 'modest rise' used correctly. There is some repetition of basic verbs like 'rose' and 'increased'. To achieve a higher band, you should incorporate a wider range of synonyms and more sophisticated collocations to describe data changes. For example, instead of repeating 'rose', you could use 'climbed', 'surged', or 'experienced an upward trajectory'. The current range is sufficient for the task but lacks the flexibility required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are grammatically accurate, and punctuation is generally correct. There are no major errors that impede communication. However, the range of structures is somewhat limited; the sentences follow a similar pattern of 'Subject + verb + data'. To improve, try to incorporate more varied sentence beginnings and complex structures, such as using participial phrases or relative clauses to combine information more fluidly.
