Student answer (Band 6.0)
The pie charts illustrate the ratio of working individuals indulging in various activities in a particular country in 1958 and 2008.
Overall, it is evident that in 1958, working accounted for the largest portion of the day, while the time consumed in travelling to work made up the smallest portion. By 2008, there was a certain increase in time spend in working, whereas spending time with family and friends had dropped to become the least time-consuming activity.
To begin with, in the year 1958, working and sleeping accounted for the majority of an adult's day in 1958, standing at 33% and 32% respectively. Moreover, the time spent in playing sports and relaxing at home followed the similar trajectory, while travelling to work was the least time-consuming activity.
subsequently, by 2008, working recorded its highest figure of 42%, while going out with family and friends occupied the shortest proportion of 6%. Additionally, playing sports and travelling to work echoed parallel behaviour.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main features of the charts and makes relevant comparisons. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial. For instance, you mention that working and sleeping accounted for the majority in 1958, but you fail to mention the specific percentage for sleeping (32%), which is a key data point. Additionally, the description of the 2008 data is quite brief. To reach a higher band, ensure that all significant trends are supported by accurate data points from the charts and that the comparison between the two years is more detailed and analytical rather than just listing figures.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear overall progression. You use cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'To begin with', and 'subsequently' to link your ideas. However, the use of 'subsequently' at the start of the final paragraph is slightly awkward in this context, as it usually denotes a sequence of events rather than a transition to a new data set. The referencing is generally clear, but the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to show contrast more effectively between the two years.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'ratio', 'indulging', 'trajectory', and 'proportion'. However, there are some issues with word choice and collocation. For example, 'indulging in various activities' is not the most natural phrasing for a formal report on time allocation. Similarly, 'echoed parallel behaviour' is a bit imprecise when describing statistical trends. To improve, focus on using more precise academic collocations and ensure that your vocabulary choices are consistently appropriate for a formal report.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some minor grammatical errors, such as 'time spend in working' (should be 'time spent working') and the capitalization error at the start of the final paragraph ('subsequently'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading. Your control over punctuation is generally good, but ensure that you maintain consistency in verb tenses when describing past data versus current trends.
