Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response attempts to summarise the data but fails to provide a clear overview or accurately report the main features. The description of the data is often vague; for example, stating 'working was popular' or 'sleeping was not quite far' lacks the precision required for Task 1. Furthermore, the interpretation of the data is inconsistent with the provided charts, as the student struggles to identify the key trends or make meaningful comparisons between the two years. The response lacks a clear summary of the most significant changes, which is essential for a high score in this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which is a positive step. However, the progression of ideas is often disjointed. The use of cohesive devices is limited and sometimes mechanical, such as 'Further delving into the information' or 'To sum up'. Referencing is occasionally unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparison between the two time periods. The logical flow is hampered by the lack of clear links between the data points, resulting in a somewhat fragmented presentation of the information.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is somewhat limited and repetitive. Phrases like 'grown up people', 'humans', and 'folks' are inappropriate for an academic report. There are also issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'as comprised by 42%' and 'contributed smallest proportion'. While the meaning is generally clear, the range of vocabulary is not sufficient to demonstrate the flexibility or precision required for higher bands. To improve, the student should focus on using more formal, academic terminology and precise reporting verbs.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include 'adults who worked was a third', 'others like to going out', and 'folks who is relaxing'. Subject-verb agreement and preposition usage are inconsistent throughout the text. While the student attempts to use complex structures, these are often faulty. A greater focus on basic grammatical accuracy and sentence construction is necessary to improve the overall quality of the writing.
