The pie charts below show how working adults in a particular country spent their time in 1958 and 2008.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Both pie charts display how working adults spent their time on different activities in 1958 and 2008.

Overall, there are total of six categories represented in the pie charts out of which the proportion of time spent working, relaxing at home and travelling to work increased, whereas the figures for sleeping and going out with friends or family declined. Working accounted for the largest proportion by 2008.

The proportion of time spent working increased from 33% in 1958 to 42% in 2008, while travelling to work rose from 2% to 7%. Similarly, time spent relaxing at home increased from 8% to 13%. Playing sports remained relatively stable, rising only slightly from 6% to 7%.

By contrast, the proportion of time spent going out with friends or family fell considerably from 19% to just 6%, representing the largest decline. Similarly, time spent sleeping decreased from 32% in 1958 to 25% in 2008.
