Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given pie chart compares the ways of time spent by employed adults in a specific country in 1958 and 2008.
As a general trend, a significant increase in working, relaxing as well as travelling time is observed whereas, a decline in family time can be seen while moving from 1958 to 2008.
In 1958, people spent one third time at work which was increased to 42% in 2008. Similarly, the proportion of day used for travelling to the office was changed from 2% to 7% in the same range of time. The working people also started spending 5% more time for relaxing at home in 2008 as compared to previous targeted year.
In contrast, a visible reduction in chart area from 19 to 6% for time utilized for family is illustrated in blue color. In a similar way, the sleeping time was also decreased from 32% to a quarter of whole day which is clearly visible in green color.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have successfully identified the main features of the charts and provided relevant comparisons. You covered all categories (work, travel, relaxing, family, sleep) and noted the trends between 1958 and 2008. However, the response is slightly underdeveloped in terms of analytical depth. For example, you mention 'one third' for work in 1958, but the data shows 33%, which is accurate, yet the overall summary could benefit from a more cohesive synthesis of the data rather than listing changes category by category. Ensure that you always provide a clear overview of the most significant shifts to fully satisfy the requirements for a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction and body paragraphs. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Similarly', 'In contrast', and 'In a similar way' to link your ideas. However, the progression of ideas is somewhat mechanical. The paragraphing is functional, but the transition between the overview and the specific details could be smoother. To improve, try to vary your linking phrases and ensure that each paragraph has a clear thematic focus, rather than just grouping points by their direction of change.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'proportion', 'significant increase', and 'visible reduction'. However, there are some awkward collocations and phrasing, such as 'ways of time spent' (should be 'how time was spent') and 'previous targeted year' (which is slightly unnatural). You also rely on basic descriptors like 'visible in green color', which is unnecessary as the reader can see the chart. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise academic collocations and avoid referring to the visual presentation of the chart itself.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'the ways of time spent' and 'one third time at work' (should be 'one third of their time'). The phrase 'the proportion of day used for travelling' is missing an article ('the day'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. You should focus on article usage and prepositional phrases to improve the accuracy of your complex sentences.
