Student answer (Band 7.0)

The pie chart compares the proportion of time allocated by employed individuals on distinct tasks: going out with family/ friends, travelling to work, working, sleeping, and relaxing at home, in 1958 and 2008.

Overall, the working, and travelling hours of adults increased over the period as well as the time they relax at home, while the average time spent sleeping, and going out with family and friends reduced. The time for playing sports remained almost unchanged.

In 1958, working individuals spent their most of the time at work, at 33% and they allocated the lowest time of their day to travel to their work, only 2%. However, in 2008, working hours rose to 42%, and the travelling time also went up by 5%. Nevertheless, people relaxing time incresed from 8% in 1958 to 13% in 2008.

Conversely, sleeping, which consumed the highest time of the day after work, at 32% decreased by 7% in 2008. Similarly, the average time working adults spent on going out with family and friends reduced from 19% in 1958 to just 6% in 2008.

Sports, on the other hand, remained almost unchanged, at 7%.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task. You have provided a clear overview of the main trends and supported these with relevant data from the charts. The comparison between 1958 and 2008 is effective, and you have correctly identified the key shifts, such as the increase in working hours and the decrease in time spent sleeping and socializing. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are accurate; for instance, ensure the distinction between 'travelling to work' and 'working' is clearly maintained throughout the analysis. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview paragraph, and body paragraphs that group information effectively. You have used cohesive devices such as 'Conversely', 'Similarly', and 'In 1958' to guide the reader through the comparison. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overview from the detailed analysis. The progression of ideas is clear, and the referencing is generally accurate. To improve, ensure that the transition between sentences is always smooth and avoid slightly repetitive sentence structures when introducing new data points.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the data, including terms like 'proportion', 'allocated', 'consumed', and 'remained almost unchanged'. There are a few minor errors, such as 'people relaxing time incresed' (should be 'people's relaxation time increased'), but these do not impede communication. You have attempted to use less common vocabulary, which is good. To move to a higher band, focus on more precise collocations and ensure spelling is accurate, as 'incresed' is a noticeable slip. Expanding your range of synonyms for 'increase' and 'decrease' would also be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You have used some complex sentences effectively, such as 'The pie chart compares the proportion of time allocated by employed individuals...'. While there are some grammatical errors, such as 'spent their most of the time' (should be 'spent most of their time') and 'travelling time also went up by 5%' (which is a slight misinterpretation of the data provided in the prompt), these errors do not significantly impede meaning. The punctuation is generally correct, and the sentence control is adequate for this level.
