Student answer (Band 7.0)
The pie chart compares the proportion of time allocated by employed individuals on distinct tasks: going out with family/ friends, travelling to work, working, sleeping, and relaxing at home, in 1958 and 2008.
Overall, the working, and travelling hours of adults increased over the period as well as the time they relax at home, while the average time spent sleeping, and going out with family and friends reduced. The time for playing sports remained almost unchanged.
In 1958, working individuals spent most of their time at work, at 33% and they allocated the lowest time of their day to travel to their work, only 2%. However, in 2008, working hours rose to 42%, and the travelling time also went up by 5%. Nevertheless, people's relaxing time incresed from 8% in 1958 to 13% in 2008.
Conversely, sleeping, which consumed the highest time of the day after work, at 32% decreased by 7% in 2008. Similarly, the average time working adults spent on going out with family and friends reduced from 19% in 1958 to just 6% in 2008.
Sports, on the other hand, remained almost unchanged, at 7%.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully identified the main trends and provided a clear overview of the data. You covered all categories and made relevant comparisons between the two years. The data is accurately reported, such as the increase in working hours from 33% to 42% and the decrease in social time. To reach a higher band, ensure that all figures are explicitly stated; for instance, you mentioned that travelling time 'went up by 5%' but did not explicitly state the final percentage (7%), which would provide more clarity for the reader. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview paragraph, and two body paragraphs that group the information effectively. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'Conversely', 'Similarly', and 'In 1958' to guide the reader through the data. The progression of ideas is smooth, and the paragraphing is appropriate for a report of this nature. The use of referencing is generally clear, though ensure that your transitions between sentences remain varied to avoid a slightly mechanical feel in some places. Overall, the structure is coherent and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information clearly, using terms like 'proportion', 'allocated', and 'consumed'. There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary, though some word choices could be more precise. For example, 'incresed' is a spelling error, and 'lowest time' could be better phrased as 'the smallest proportion of time'. While your vocabulary is adequate for the task, incorporating more varied collocations related to data trends (e.g., 'witnessed a significant rise' or 'remained relatively stable') would elevate the response further.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, and your control of grammar is generally good. Most sentences are error-free, and the meaning is always clear. There are a few minor slips, such as the spelling error 'incresed' and a slight awkwardness in the phrase 'the lowest time of their day to travel'. Punctuation is generally accurate, though be careful with unnecessary commas, such as in 'the working, and travelling hours'. To improve, try to incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as relative clauses or passive voice, to enhance the sophistication of your writing.
