Student answer (Band 7.0)

The pie charts illustrates the proportion of the working adults that how they spent their day on different activities in 1958 and 2008.

Overall, it can be seen that working accounted for the largest proportion of the adults' time in both years, while the amount of time spent travelling to work and relaxing at home increased considerably. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response effectively identifies and reports the main features of the data. You have provided a clear overview and supported the key trends with relevant data points from 1958 and 2008. The comparison between the two years is well-handled, and the main features are highlighted appropriately. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are accurate; for instance, you mentioned 'working increased by 9%', but the data shows an increase from 33% to 42%, which is a 9 percentage point increase, but phrasing it as 'increased by 9%' can be ambiguous. Overall, the task is well-addressed with a clear focus on the significant changes over the fifty-year period.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview paragraph, and two body paragraphs focusing on the specific years. The progression of ideas is smooth, and you make good use of cohesive devices such as 'In comparison', 'By contrast', and 'Meanwhile' to link your points. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the general trends from the specific data analysis. The referencing is clear, and the flow of information is easy to follow throughout the response. The structure is coherent and supports the overall purpose of the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information clearly. Phrases like 'accounted for the largest proportion', 'increased markedly', and 'fell sharply' are appropriate for describing trends in data. However, there are minor issues with collocation and precision, such as 'climbed at 13%' (should be 'climbed to 13%') and 'accounted similar as its figure' (should be 'remained similar to its 1958 figure'). While these errors do not impede communication, refining these collocations would elevate the lexical quality of your writing to a higher level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most sentences are error-free, and the grammar is generally accurate. There are a few minor slips, such as the subject-verb agreement error in the first sentence ('The pie charts illustrates') and the preposition error 'climbed at 13%'. Despite these occasional inaccuracies, the control of grammar is strong, and the meaning is always clear. The use of comparative structures is well-managed, contributing to a professional tone suitable for an Academic Task 1 report.
