Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to summarize the data but fails to provide a clear overview of the main trends. While it identifies some key figures, the analysis is often inaccurate or confusing. For instance, the student mentions '2010' when the data only covers 1958 and 2008. Furthermore, the description of the data is disjointed, and the comparison between the two years lacks clarity. The report fails to highlight the most significant changes, such as the shift in working hours or the decline in social activities, instead providing a list of percentages that are difficult to follow. The information is not effectively synthesized.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the internal flow is weak. The use of cohesive devices is mechanical and often misused, such as 'The one is highest proportion of then second' at the end of the text, which is unintelligible. The progression of ideas is not logical, and the referencing is frequently unclear. While there is an attempt to use transition words like 'Overall' and 'whereas', the lack of clear sentence structure makes the relationship between the data points difficult to track. Paragraphing is present but does not effectively group related information.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and repetitive. The student relies heavily on basic terms like 'proportion', 'category', and 'similar', often using them incorrectly or in awkward collocations, such as 'Working and sleeping were approximately similar proportion in category'. There are frequent errors in word choice that hinder the reader's understanding, such as 'least proportion in during the period'. The range of vocabulary is insufficient to convey the data with precision, and the phrasing is often unnatural, indicating a lack of control over academic register.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that impede communication. There are issues with article usage ('the proportion of the day'), subject-verb agreement, and sentence structure. Many sentences are fragmented or lack necessary verbs, such as 'Going out with friends and family proportion of 19% respectively'. The student struggles to construct complex sentences correctly, and the punctuation is inconsistent. While some simple sentences are understandable, the high frequency of errors throughout the text makes it difficult to read and demonstrates a limited command of English grammar.
