Student answer (Band 5.0)

The pie charts shows the data percentage of adults who spent their day on various activiries But these pie charts differentiate the life style of adults between 1958 and 2008.

If we look at 1958 in this pie chart it shows that adulys spend most of the time of day by working and sleeping and a little bit time for other activities like meeting friends and going out with family. If we break down 24 hours then we can say 9 hors for work and 8 hours for sleep. 1 hour for travelling to work and 2 hours to relax at home and remaining 4 hours with friends and family.

In 2008 due to digital era and new technologies adults are struggling more by working more hours to manage their expenses that why they spent almost half day at work and just 1/4 day for sleeping and among this they have less time for meeting with friends and family and playing sports.

If we compare the life between 1958 and 2008. I would say 1958 was good like very simple and relaxing but in 2008 we have more technologies we cover distances in hours that were covered in days in 1958. Both times are good at their time but in 2008 life become more practical than relaxing.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0

The response fails to meet the requirements of an Academic Task 1 report. Instead of providing an objective summary of the data, the student includes personal opinions and subjective commentary, such as 'I would say 1958 was good' and 'life become more practical'. The task requires a neutral description of trends and comparisons. Furthermore, the data interpretation is inaccurate; the student invents specific hour counts (e.g., '9 hours for work') that are not supported by the provided pie charts. The response lacks a clear overview of the main trends, focusing instead on speculative reasons for the changes rather than reporting the actual figures.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response is organised into paragraphs, but the progression of ideas is illogical due to the inclusion of personal opinion. Cohesive devices are used in a very basic and repetitive manner, such as starting sentences with 'If we look at' or 'If we compare'. Referencing is often unclear, and the transition between the description of the charts and the author's personal reflection is abrupt. The lack of a clear, objective structure makes the report difficult to follow as a piece of academic writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is limited and repetitive. The student relies on simple, informal language such as 'good', 'little bit time', and 'struggling more'. There are several spelling errors, such as 'activiries' and 'adulys', and awkward phrasing like 'due to digital era'. The range of vocabulary is insufficient to describe data trends accurately (e.g., using 'spent' repeatedly instead of more precise terms like 'allocated', 'devoted', or 'accounted for'). The language used is more appropriate for an informal conversation than an academic report.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. There are issues with subject-verb agreement ('The pie charts shows'), incorrect verb tenses ('life become'), and awkward sentence structures ('that why they spent'). The range of grammatical structures is very limited, consisting mostly of simple sentences. There is a lack of complex sentence forms, and punctuation is inconsistent. The errors are frequent enough to cause some difficulty for the reader, and the overall control of grammar is weak.
