Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers the main features of the data and makes relevant comparisons between 1958 and 2008. However, the overview is weak; it lacks a clear summary of the most significant trends, such as the increase in work hours and the decrease in sleep. The data is presented in a somewhat repetitive, list-like fashion rather than being synthesized into a cohesive analytical report. While all parts of the task are addressed, the lack of a clear, overarching summary and the reliance on listing individual percentages prevents the response from reaching a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the progression of ideas is mechanical. The use of cohesive devices is very limited, relying heavily on simple sentence structures and repetitive phrasing like 'People spend' or 'In 1958'. There is a lack of linking words to show contrast or transition between the two time periods, which makes the flow feel disjointed. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and the paragraphing does not effectively group related information to guide the reader through the comparison.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is basic and repetitive, which limits the ability to describe the data with precision. Phrases like 'huge time' and 'maximum time' are used repeatedly, and there is little attempt to use a wider range of academic vocabulary to describe trends (e.g., 'fluctuated', 'remained stable', 'witnessed a significant rise'). While the meaning is generally clear, the lack of variety and the occasional awkward phrasing (e.g., 'relaxing in home') indicate a limited range of lexical resources.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response relies almost exclusively on simple sentence structures. There are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('in particular nation', 'in 2008 the maximum time'), prepositions ('relaxing in home'), and verb tense consistency. While the errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to be distracting. There is a lack of complex sentence structures, which prevents the demonstration of a wider grammatical range. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with several instances of missing or misplaced spaces after commas and periods.
