Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the charts, such as the increase in working hours and the decrease in time spent with friends and family. However, the overview is somewhat weak and lacks a clear summary of the most significant trends. While the response identifies key changes, some data points are presented in a list-like fashion rather than being synthesised into a coherent comparison. The mention of 'sports' is accurate, but the analysis could be more precise regarding the overall shift in lifestyle. To improve, ensure the overview highlights the most striking differences between the two years rather than just listing individual changes.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is organised into paragraphs, but the logical flow is occasionally disrupted by abrupt transitions. While some cohesive devices like 'Additionally' and 'However' are used, the connection between sentences is sometimes mechanical. The final paragraph is redundant, as it repeats the purpose of the task rather than providing a concluding insight. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider range of cohesive devices to link ideas more fluidly and ensure that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus that contributes to the overall progression of the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the reader to understand the trends described. However, the range is somewhat limited and repetitive. Phrases like 'number of people' are used frequently, and there is a lack of more sophisticated, academic vocabulary that would enhance the report. For example, instead of 'reduced drastically', one could use 'experienced a significant decline'. There are also minor issues with word choice, such as 'partaking in sports' which is slightly awkward in this context. Expanding your repertoire of synonyms and collocations will help improve your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('number of working people', 'in year 1958') and punctuation issues, including a lack of capitalisation at the start of sentences. Some sentences are also slightly fragmented or run-on, which affects the overall clarity. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and article usage would be highly beneficial.
