Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the charts, including the comparison between 1958 and 2008. You successfully identified the highest categories and noted the introduction of new activities like sports. However, the report lacks a clear overview or summary paragraph, which is essential for a Band 6 or higher. The data reporting is somewhat repetitive, as you list percentages for each category individually rather than grouping them logically to highlight trends. To improve, ensure you provide a clear introductory statement that paraphrases the prompt and a concluding overview that synthesizes the most significant changes observed over the fifty-year period.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is organized into two main sections, but the paragraphing is insufficient; it would be better to have a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. Cohesive devices are very limited, relying heavily on simple conjunctions like 'and' or 'but'. There is a lack of variety in linking words, which makes the flow feel mechanical. For example, the transition between the 1958 data and the 2008 data is abrupt. Using more sophisticated cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'Furthermore', or 'Conversely' would help improve the logical progression of your ideas.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is quite basic and repetitive. You frequently use the phrase 'time they serve' or 'time they spent', which is not natural in this context. There are also errors in word choice, such as 'the sport section is not include' (should be 'included') and 'peoples' (should be 'people'). While the range is sufficient to convey the basic information, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. To improve, try to use a wider variety of verbs and nouns related to data description, such as 'allocate', 'account for', 'proportion', and 'fluctuate'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. There are consistent issues with subject-verb agreement ('the chart shows us the study which tell us') and tense usage ('1858' instead of '1958'). Sentence structures are mostly simple, and there is a lack of complex sentence forms. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with several run-on sentences and missing commas. To reach a higher band, you need to demonstrate better control over basic grammar, particularly articles and verb tenses, and attempt to incorporate more complex sentence structures like relative clauses or passive voice.
