Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response covers the main features of the charts, identifying key trends such as the increase in working hours and the decrease in socialising. However, the analysis is hampered by significant inaccuracies in data reporting. For instance, you state '33' and '32' without specifying these are percentages, and you claim 'travelling to work' was the smallest portion in 1958, whereas the chart shows other categories might be smaller. Furthermore, the description of 2008 data is imprecise, such as stating '42 of the total' without the percentage sign. To improve, ensure all data points are clearly labelled with units and that comparisons are factually accurate based on the provided diagrams.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. You use some cohesive devices like 'Overall', 'Furthermore', and 'Moreover' to link ideas. However, the progression of ideas is sometimes mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally unclear. For example, the transition between the 1958 and 2008 paragraphs is abrupt. Additionally, some sentences lack logical flow, such as 'The decreasing ratio is attain by going out with friends or family', which makes the connection between the data and the conclusion difficult to follow. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring each sentence builds logically on the previous one would enhance the coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is somewhat limited and repetitive. You frequently use the word 'ratio' incorrectly to describe percentages, and there are persistent issues with word forms, such as 'the rising ratio obtain' instead of 'the rising proportion obtained'. Other errors include 'contain' used where 'accounted for' or 'represented' would be more appropriate. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the basic meaning, the lack of precision and the repeated grammatical errors in word choice prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on learning collocations related to data description, such as 'accounted for', 'constituted', or 'represented'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text that occasionally impede clarity. You struggle with subject-verb agreement and verb forms, such as 'The given chart illustrate' (should be 'illustrates') and 'the rising ratio obtain' (should be 'obtained'). Additionally, the use of articles and prepositions is inconsistent. While there is an attempt to use complex structures, they are often faulty, such as 'the highest ratio is obtained by working and lowest portion is accounted by travelling'. To improve, focus on basic sentence construction, ensuring that subjects and verbs agree and that verb tenses are used consistently when describing data.
