Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response attempts to address the prompt but fails to provide a clear overview or a structured summary of the main trends. The data presentation is fragmented and contains significant inaccuracies compared to the provided charts (e.g., misidentifying percentages and activities). The response lacks a clear analytical focus, instead listing data points in a disjointed manner. To improve, you must identify the most significant changes between 1958 and 2008, such as the increase in working hours or the decrease in sleep, and present these as a cohesive comparison rather than a simple list of figures.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0
The essay lacks logical organization and paragraphing. There is no clear introduction, body, or conclusion. The use of cohesive devices is extremely limited, with sentences often starting abruptly or being linked by repetitive 'and' connectors. The progression of ideas is difficult to follow because the information is not grouped by category or time period effectively. To improve, use clear paragraph breaks to separate your overview from your detailed analysis and employ a wider range of linking words such as 'in contrast', 'furthermore', or 'whereas' to connect your ideas logically.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.0
The vocabulary is very basic and repetitive, relying heavily on simple verbs and nouns. There are frequent errors in word choice, such as 'present' instead of 'percent', and 'her works' instead of 'their work'. The range of vocabulary is insufficient to express the data with precision. To improve, focus on learning specific terminology for describing charts, such as 'accounted for', 'witnessed a rise', 'remained stable', and 'proportion'. Additionally, ensure you use accurate terminology for percentages and time-related comparisons.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that often impede communication. There are issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'pie charts indicates'), incorrect pronoun usage ('her works'), and missing articles. The sentence structures are mostly simple and often incomplete or run-on. There is a lack of complex sentence structures, which is necessary for higher bands. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, ensuring every sentence has a clear subject and verb, and practice using articles and prepositions correctly. Proofreading for basic errors like 'present' vs 'percent' is essential.
