Student answer (Band 7.0)
The pie charts illustrate the proportion of time spent by employed adults in a day in a particular country during 1958 and 2008.
Overall, working accounted for the largest proportion of the day in both 1958 and 2008, with time spent on sports constituting the smallest share in both the years. While time taken to travel to work and time spent relaxing at home increased over the years, the time provided to stepping out with friends and family and sleeping decreased.
In 1958, working and sleeping accounted for more than three-fifths of the time in a day at 33% and 32% respectively. In the remaining time, people preferred going out with relatives and friends, consuming 19% of the time in a day with sports being an even less chosen activity accounting for 6% of the day. Travelling, on the contrast, required only 2% of the day.
As for 2008, a greater proportion of time was spent working, increasing from 33% to 42% over half a century. Likewise, other activities witnessed an increase, with time spent on travelling to work more than tripling to 7% and leisure time at home witnessing a rise to 13%. By contrast, time consumed by activities like sleeping and public outings with friends and family declined considerably with the former reduced to 25% and the latter witnessing a steep drop to 6%. Sports activities more or less remained stable at around 7%.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response effectively addresses all parts of the task. You have provided a clear overview of the main trends and successfully selected and reported key features from the charts. The comparisons between 1958 and 2008 are accurate and well-supported by the data provided. For example, you correctly identified the increase in working hours and the decline in time spent on social outings. The information is logically grouped, and the data points are used appropriately to illustrate the changes over the half-century period. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are perfectly accurate; for instance, ensure that the sum of percentages in your descriptions aligns precisely with the visual data provided.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is well-organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving from an introduction and overview to detailed analysis of the two years. You have used a variety of cohesive devices such as 'In the remaining time', 'As for 2008', and 'By contrast' to link your ideas effectively. The paragraphing is logical and helps the reader follow the comparison between the two time periods. The flow is smooth, and the referencing is clear throughout the text. To improve further, ensure that the transition between sentences is always natural and avoids repetitive structures.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for an academic report, such as 'proportion', 'constituting', 'witnessed an increase', and 'steep drop'. The language is generally precise and conveys the intended meaning without difficulty. There are occasional minor issues with collocation, such as 'time provided to stepping out', which could be phrased more naturally. However, the vocabulary is sufficient to allow for flexibility and precision. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations and avoid slightly awkward phrasing to enhance the academic tone of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The response displays a good variety of complex sentence structures, such as the use of 'While' and 'As for' clauses. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over grammar and punctuation is strong. There are very few grammatical slips, and those that exist do not impede communication. For example, 'time provided to stepping out' is slightly awkward but understandable. You maintain a consistent tense usage appropriate for describing historical data. To reach the highest band, ensure that all prepositional phrases and verb-noun collocations are perfectly natural and error-free.
