Student answer (Band 7.0)
The pie charts illustrate the proportion of time spent by employed adults in a day in a particular country during 1958 and 2008.
Overall, working accounted for the largest proportion of the day in both 1958 and 2008, with time spent on sports constituting the smallest share in both the years. While time taken to travel to work and time spent relaxing at home increased over the years, the time allocated to friends and family and sleeping decreased.
In 1958, working and sleeping accounted for more than three-fifths of the time in a day at 33% and 32% respectively. In the remaining time, people preferred going out with relatives and friends, consuming 19% of the time in a day with sports being an even less chosen activity accounting for 6% of the day. Travelling, on the contrary, required only 2% of the day.
As for 2008, a greater proportion of time was spent working, increasing from 33% to 42% over half a century. Likewise, other activities witnessed an increase, with time spent on travelling to work more than tripling to 7% and leisure time at home witnessing a rise to 13%. By contrast, time consumed by activities like sleeping and public outings with friends and family declined considerably with the former reduced to 25% and the latter witnessing a steep drop to 6%. Sports activities more or less remained stable at around 7%.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response effectively addresses all parts of the task. You have provided a clear overview of the main trends and supported these with relevant data from the charts. The comparison between 1958 and 2008 is well-integrated, and you have successfully identified the key features, such as the increase in working hours and the decline in time spent with family. The data is accurate, and the selection of information is appropriate for a summary. To reach a higher band, ensure that all comparisons are fully supported; for instance, you mentioned 'more than three-fifths' for 33% and 32%, which is mathematically incorrect (33+32=65%, which is less than two-thirds). Precision in data interpretation is essential.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a distinct focus: the introduction, the overall trend, and the detailed breakdown of the two years. You use a range of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'In the remaining time', 'As for 2008', and 'By contrast', which help the reader follow the comparison. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overview from the specific data analysis. The flow is smooth, and the referencing is clear throughout the text, making the information easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information with precision. Phrases like 'accounted for', 'witnessed an increase', and 'steep drop' are used effectively to describe trends. There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary, which adds variety to the report. However, there are minor issues with word choice, such as 'public outings with friends and family', which is slightly imprecise given the chart labels. Overall, the vocabulary is natural and appropriate for an academic report, and the errors do not impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The response displays a good variety of complex structures, such as the use of participial phrases ('increasing from 33% to 42%') and subordinate clauses ('While time taken to travel... increased'). The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation is generally strong. There are very occasional minor slips, such as 'in both the years', which should simply be 'in both years'. These errors are non-systematic and do not affect the clarity of your writing. Your grammatical control is solid and supports the overall coherence of the task.
