Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main features of the pie charts and makes relevant comparisons between 1958 and 2008. You successfully identified the key trends, such as the increase in work and travel time and the decrease in social activities. However, the report lacks precision in data reporting. For instance, stating that social time 'fell to one third of that in 2008' is mathematically inaccurate based on the provided figures (19% to 6%). Additionally, some descriptions are vague, such as 'working matures are relaxing more'. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are accurately transcribed and that the overview clearly highlights the most significant shifts without relying on imprecise language.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. There is a clear progression of ideas, moving from general trends to specific data points. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or inaccurate. Phrases like 'In detail' and 'In conclusion' are used, but the internal linking between sentences is occasionally weak, leading to a slightly disjointed flow. For example, the transition between the discussion of sleeping and the conclusion could be smoother. Improving the variety and precision of your linking words will help the information flow more naturally.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey the main points, such as 'declined', 'significantly', and 'attributed'. However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and spelling errors that hinder precision, such as 'persue' (pursue), 'rised' (rose), 'matures' (adults), and 'intrest' (interest). The phrase 'work attributed' is also non-standard in this context. To improve, focus on using vocabulary that is more specific to data reporting and ensure you check the spelling of common academic terms. Expanding your range of synonyms for 'increase' and 'decrease' would also be beneficial.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Common issues include subject-verb agreement ('some activities seen decline'), incorrect verb forms ('is increased', 'is rised'), and awkward phrasing ('time took toll on other activities that was persued'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma usage. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall fluency of the writing. Focusing on consistent verb tense usage and basic sentence construction will help improve your accuracy.
