Student answer (Band 5.0)

There are two pie charts, each showing adults' activities in a particular country and how they spent their time in 1958 and 2008.

In this chart, we see a large increase in working hours from 33% to 62%, a major change in their daily routine, and an increase in traveling to work from 2% to 7%.

However, the graph also omits some activities, such as going out with family, which was 19% in 1958 and 6% in 2008, and there was also a huge decrease in sleeping hours from 32% to 25%, but in relaxing there was a significant increase from 8% to 13%

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.5

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which significantly impacts the ability to fully develop the task. While you identify some key trends, such as the increase in working hours and the decrease in sleeping time, the analysis is incomplete. The response ends abruptly mid-sentence, meaning the overview and key comparisons are not fully realised. To improve, ensure you provide a clear, distinct overview of the main trends and ensure all data points are fully described. The failure to complete the response prevents a higher score, as the task is only partially addressed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response shows some attempt at logical organisation, using paragraphs to separate different observations. However, the use of cohesive devices is limited and somewhat mechanical, such as the repetitive use of 'and' and 'there was'. The abrupt ending severely disrupts the flow and coherence of the text. To improve, use a wider variety of linking words and transition signals to connect your ideas more fluidly. Ensure that each paragraph has a clear focus and that the response reaches a logical conclusion rather than stopping mid-sentence.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. You use basic descriptors like 'large increase', 'major change', and 'huge decrease'. While these are accurate, they are repetitive. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more sophisticated vocabulary related to data description, such as 'significant surge', 'dramatic decline', or 'marginal shift'. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the basic meaning, but it does not demonstrate the flexibility or control needed for a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response uses a mix of simple and some complex structures, but the control is inconsistent. There are issues with sentence structure, particularly the incomplete final sentence. Punctuation is generally functional, but the overall grammatical range is limited. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of complex sentence structures, such as relative clauses or participle phrases, to describe the data. Ensure that all sentences are complete and grammatically sound. Frequent errors in sentence construction and the unfinished nature of the text limit the score in this criterion.
