Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response attempts to address the prompt by comparing the two pie charts, but the information provided is often inaccurate or confusing. For example, the student claims 'working accounted for largest proportion' in both years, but the data shows sleeping was the largest category in both 1958 and 2008. Furthermore, the mention of 'working youth generation' is an incorrect interpretation of the data, which refers to 'working adults'. The summary of trends is disjointed, and the lack of clear, accurate data reporting makes it difficult to follow the main features of the charts. The response fails to clearly highlight the significant shifts, such as the increase in leisure time or the decrease in working hours.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. The use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or misused, such as 'At firstly' and 'Whereas' used at the start of sentences where they do not fit logically. Referencing is frequently unclear, particularly when discussing the data points. The transition between the introduction, body paragraphs, and the overall summary is disjointed, making the text feel like a collection of loosely related sentences rather than a cohesive report. The punctuation is also problematic, with many missing spaces after commas and periods, which further hinders the flow of ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is limited and repetitive. The student relies heavily on basic phrasing such as 'accounted for largest proportion' and 'recorded for lowest share'. There are several instances of word-choice errors, such as 'recorded for' instead of 'accounted for' or 'represented', and the misuse of 'youth generation' instead of 'working adults'. The range of vocabulary is insufficient to describe trends or comparisons with any precision. Spelling errors, such as '20008', and awkward phrasing throughout the text indicate a limited control over lexical items required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that often impede communication. There are consistent issues with subject-verb agreement, article usage, and sentence structure. For instance, 'working accounted for largest proportion' lacks necessary articles, and 'the major trend was playing sports and travelling to work as a same' is grammatically incorrect. The student attempts some complex structures, but these are often faulty, leading to confusion. Punctuation is also a significant issue, with many missing spaces after punctuation marks, which makes the text difficult to read. The majority of sentences contain errors, limiting the range and accuracy.
