The pie charts below show how working adults in a particular country spent their time in 1958 and 2008.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

The two pie charts compare the proportions of time that working adults spent on various activities during a typical day in 1958 and 2008.

Overall, working accounted for the largest proportion of the day in both years, and this figure increased considerably over the period. By contrast, the amount of time spent sleeping and going out with friends or family declined. In 2008, three additional activities—playing sports, travelling to work and going out with friends/family—were recorded.

In 1958, working occupied 33% of the day, followed closely by sleeping at 32%. Going out with friends or family accounted for 19%, while adults spent 8% of their day relaxing at home. Only 2% was devoted to travelling to work.

By 2008, the proportion of time spent working had risen to 42%, an increase of 9 percentage points. Sleeping, however, fell to 25%, while relaxing at home increased to 13%. The proportion spent travelling to work also rose substantially, from 2% to 7%. Meanwhile, going out with friends or family decreased sharply to 6%. The remaining 7% of the day was spent playing sports.
