Student answer (Band 6.5)
The given pie charts illustrates the proportion of individuals of a specific nation who perform different activities to spend their time in two years (1958 and 2008).
Overall, it can be clearly seen that the percentage of people who were working was higher as compared to other activities where time spent on travelling to work was lower in both the given years.
In 1958, exactly one third of adults spent time on working which increased by approximately 10% in 2008, whereas this portion was followed by spending time on sleeping with 32% and 25% of people in 1958 and 2008 respectively. However, travelling to work was the least preferred activity among people at 2% in the first given year and rose by 5% in the next given year.
Individuals who were relaxing at home were only 8% in 1958 and increased to 13% after 50 years. In contrast, the percentage of adults playing sports remained same at 7% in both the given years, but 19% of them preferred going out with friends and family in 1958 and 6% in 2008.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have successfully identified the main features and provided relevant comparisons between the two years. You covered all categories shown in the charts and highlighted key trends, such as the increase in working hours and the decrease in time spent going out. However, the analysis could be improved by ensuring greater accuracy in data reporting. For instance, you stated that working time increased by 'approximately 10%', but the data shows a shift from 33% to 42%, which is a 9% increase. Additionally, you mentioned that travelling to work 'rose by 5%' from 2%, which is mathematically incorrect based on the chart (it rose to 7%). Precision is essential for a high band score in Task 1.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The response is logically organised into clear paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'whereas', 'however', and 'in contrast' to link ideas effectively. The progression of information is generally smooth, moving from general trends to specific data points. To reach a higher band, ensure that your referencing is always precise; for example, when you mention 'this portion', it is clear, but ensure that all comparisons are linked back to the specific year or category to avoid any ambiguity for the reader.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information clearly. Phrases like 'proportion of individuals', 'least preferred activity', and 'remained same' are functional. However, the range is somewhat limited and relies on fairly standard phrasing. To improve, try to incorporate more varied synonyms for 'increase' or 'decrease' (e.g., 'surged', 'declined', 'experienced a marginal rise') and use more precise collocations. There are no significant spelling errors, and the vocabulary used is appropriate for the task, though it lacks the sophistication required for a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the use of 'whereas' and 'although' clauses. While your meaning is always clear, there are some grammatical slips. For example, the opening sentence 'The given pie charts illustrates' contains a subject-verb agreement error (it should be 'charts illustrate'). Additionally, 'remained same' should be 'remained the same'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on proofreading for articles and subject-verb agreement to enhance your accuracy.
