Student answer (Band 7.5)
The pie charts illustrate how working adults in a particular country spent their time on different activities in 1958 and 2008.
Overall, working and sleeping accounted for the largest proportions of people's daily time in both years. Over the 50-year period, adults spent more time working and relaxing at home, while the amount of time spent sleeping and going out with friends or family decreased.
In 1958, sleeping was the activity that occupied the largest proportion of the day, at 32%, closely followed by working at 33%. Going out with friends and family represented 19% of the day. Much smaller amounts of time were spent relaxing at home, at 8%, and playing sports, at 6%. Travelling to work accounted for only 2%.
By 2008, working had become significantly more dominant, increasing by 9 percentage points to 42%. In contrast, sleeping fell to 25%. The proportion of time spent relaxing at home also increased considerably, from 8% to 13%. However, going out with friends and family experienced a substantial decline, dropping from 19% to just 6%. Meanwhile, travelling to work increased to 7%, while the percentage of time spent playing sports remained relatively similar at 7%.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response is excellent and fully addresses all parts of the task. You have provided a clear overview that highlights the main trends, such as the shift in working and sleeping patterns. The data is accurately selected and reported, with effective comparisons made between the two years. For example, you correctly identified the 9 percentage point increase in working and the significant decline in socialising. The information is well-organised, and the key features are clearly highlighted, meeting all the requirements for a high band score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The response is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas. You have used paragraphing effectively to separate the overview from the detailed body paragraphs. Cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'However', and 'Meanwhile' are used naturally and accurately to link ideas and contrast the data points. The flow of information is smooth, and the referencing is clear throughout the text. There is no evidence of mechanical or repetitive use of linking words, which demonstrates a high level of control over the structure of the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information precisely. Phrases like 'significantly more dominant', 'substantial decline', and 'occupied the largest proportion' demonstrate a good command of academic language. The word choices are accurate and appropriate for the context of describing statistical data. While the vocabulary is effective and natural, it could be slightly more varied to reach the highest band, but it is certainly more than adequate for a high-level response. There are no errors in word choice or spelling.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The response demonstrates a wide range of grammatical structures with a high level of accuracy. You have successfully used complex sentences, such as 'By 2008, working had become significantly more dominant, increasing by 9 percentage points to 42%'. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and the punctuation is used correctly throughout. The control over verb tenses, particularly the use of the past simple and past perfect to describe the changes over the 50-year period, is precise and consistent. There are no grammatical slips that impede communication.
