Student answer (Band 5.0)

The given charts represents the time spent by working adults of a particular country in 1958 and 2008.

Overall, most of time was spended in working and sleeping in both year. Whereas going out with friends reduced in 2008. However, travelling to work and playing sports remain constant. But, significant increasement in relaxing at home increased.

Firstly, most of the portion is occupied by working in both years 1958 and 2008, which are 33% and 42% respectively. Sleeping of worker also consume large percentage, but reduces from 32% in 1958 and 25% in 2008.

Secondly, outing with family reduces from 19% to 6% while passing the year. In spite of having increasement in other, only minimum rise can be seen in travelling to work by 5 %. Similar trend can be seen in playing and relaxing, that is 5%, 7% and 5% respectively. Therefore there is small improvent in these.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response covers the main features of the charts, such as the increase in working time and the decrease in sleeping time. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial and contains inaccuracies. For instance, the claim that 'travelling to work and playing sports remain constant' is not supported by the data, which shows changes in these categories. Furthermore, the description of 'relaxing at home' is confusingly phrased as an 'increasement'. While the overview is present, the reporting of data is inconsistent, and some comparisons are unclear or factually incorrect based on the provided figures. To reach a higher band, ensure that data points are accurately transcribed and that trends are described with greater precision.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or misused. Phrases like 'while passing the year' and 'in spite of having increasement' are unnatural and hinder the flow of ideas. The transition between sentences is sometimes abrupt, and the logical progression is occasionally disrupted by confusing phrasing. While there is an attempt to use linking words like 'Firstly' and 'Secondly', the overall cohesion is limited by the lack of variety and the awkward construction of sentences, which makes the text feel somewhat disjointed.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary range is limited and repetitive. There are several instances of non-standard word formation, such as 'increasement' (instead of increase) and 'improvent' (instead of improvement). The word 'spended' is an incorrect past tense form of 'spend'. While the student attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'occupied' and 'percentage', the frequent errors in word choice and morphology (e.g., 'sleeping of worker') restrict the ability to convey information precisely. To improve, the student should focus on learning correct word forms and common collocations used in data description.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response relies heavily on simple sentence structures. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('The given charts represents') and incorrect verb tenses ('most of time was spended'). Punctuation is generally functional, but the sentence construction is often awkward, leading to a lack of clarity. While the meaning is usually understandable, the high frequency of basic grammatical errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on consistent verb tense usage and subject-verb agreement would significantly improve the accuracy of the writing.
